  14. It is well worth reading the history files as these cover most of
  15. changes in commands and use since v1.3x.

  18. Installation
  19. ============

  21. First Time
  22. ~~~~~~~~~~
  23.  
  24. Actually, first time installation is probably the easiest of the lot.
  25.  
  26. Before you carry out instalation, you will need to know the following:
  27.  
  28.   Your machine's name, for eg "comptech"
  29.  
  30.   The name of your domain, for eg "demon.co.uk"
  31.  
  32.   Your IP address, for eg "158.152.25.231"
  33.  
  34.   What serial port you want use, so that you can select
  35.   the required driver and speed.
  36.   
  37.   The name or IP address of a news server that you are allowed to use if
  38.   you wish to recive news.
  39.  
  40.   The name or IP address of a mail gateway that you are allowed to use if
  41.   you wish outgoing mail to be routed via a single machine (often saves
  42.   on online time, though of course !TCPIP can quite happily work without
  43.   a mail gateway.)
  44.  
  45.   The name or IP address of a time server that you are allowed to use if
  46.   you wish to read network time and correct your computers clock with it.
  47.  
  48.   The IP addresses of between one and three name servers if you are
  49.   connecting to the Internet, rather than a small private TCP/IP based
  50.   network.

  52.   It is beyind the scope of this to give expanations of the above.
  53.   There is plenty of literature around to enable you to understand news
  54.   servers, name servers, mail gateways, IP addresses, host names etc.
  55.  
  56.   You should be able to find out all of the above information from your
  57.   Internet provider, usually with a quick phone call.
  58.

  60.   Assuming you have the above information, then create a directory
  61.   called "Internet", or "TCPIP" for example on your hard disc and unpack
  62.   the contents of this archive into it.
  63.  
  64.   This should leave you with a directory structure as follows:
  65.      Internet.!TCPIP
  66.      Internet.!TCPIPUser
  67.      Internet.TCPIP_Doc
  68.      Internet.TCPIP_New
  69.      ReadMe (This file)

  71.   Now open the TCPIP_New directory and load the !Setup file into a text
  72.   editor and enter the details where indicated.

  75.   Once you have done this, save the !Setup file back to where is was.
  76.   
  77.   In case your unpacked this with an archive filing system, I would
  78.   suggest that you now open the !TCPIPUser directory and double click on
  79.   the !Boot file so that you can be sure that the config program will
  80.   find the correct copy of !TCPIPUser.

  82.   Now double-click on the !Config file. This will Merge the configuration
  83.   information you have provided with a set of default setup files, leaving
  84.   you with a working setup.

  87. Upgrading from v2.01
  88. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  89. The following files in !TCPIPUser have changed, or are new:
  90.  
  91.   !Boot      Path variable updated, including corrected FTP$Dir.
  92.  
  93.   !Run       Now only opens the Downloads directory.
  94.  
  95.   Downloads  The default place in which downloaded files are saved.
  96.  
  97.   PathEnt    Path processing control for the FTP client.
  98.  
  99.   Menus.*    A new set of menus to enable access to new facilties.
  100.  
  101.   Config     A new variable is required at the top of the file and
  102.              some new command options are available.
  103.  
  104. There are two options for upgrading, one is to do a fresh instalation as
  105. above, or the other is to delete the menus.* files, and replace !Boot, !Run,
  106. and menus from the Archive. Copy PathEnt out of the Archive into
  107. !TCPIPUser, create a directory "Downloads" in !TCPIPUser and make a few
  108. small changes to you config file as follows:
  109.  
  110. 1. At the top, with all the set or setvar commands, add 
  111.  
  112.    set nsqserver "ns.{domain}"
  113.   
  114.    This sets the name server used by the nsquery menus.
  115.    
  116. 2. You may want to change the "attach asy ... ... slip ..." command
  117.    fromm "slip" to "cslip" to take advantage of the slight speed
  118.    increase CSLIP offser over SLIP. Check with your provider that CSLIP
  119.    is supported, and also check if you need to select a different
  120.    protocol at the initial login stage.
  121.  
  122. 3. Finally, locate the "nntp xxx" commands and add "nntp trim 48".
  123.    This sets the maximum age of the NNTP ID History - yes it now gets
  124.    trimmed. ;-)

  127. Upgrading from v2.02 (Not the later 2.02b)
  128. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  129. I would recommend that you update you menus and incorporate changes to
  130. the Config file. All of the file changed since v2.01 have also changes
  131. since the first v2.02 (dev) release.

  134. Upgrading from v2.02b
  135. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  136. Sorry, the ID history has reverted back to separate files for each
  137. server, so you will need to copy the "History" file as "xxxHist" for
  138. each server you use, where "xxx" is the abbreviation for the server.
  139.  
  140. Other than that, you only actually need the new !RunImage from this
  141. archive.
  142.  
  143. It would be worth incorporating Config file differences outline for
  144. upgrading from v2.01.
