- THE USE OF A MARS BAR ANTENNA
- =============================
-
- with thanks to Pat G0FIS
-
- Many of you, I am certain, will have wanted to use a resonant Mars Bar
- as a home brew antenna for the Amateur bands.
-
- A Mars Bar is (approximately) a prism with rectangular cross sections of
- dimensions 10.7 x 3.4 x 2 cm. Hence the volume is 72.76 cm3, the area 129 cm2
- and the mass 68g (according to the wrapper). The density is therefore
- 0.935 g/cm3. It follows, then, that the specific gravity of the Bar is
- 0.935. ie Mars Bars float (but don't taste too good afterwards).
-
- The moment of inertia of a Mars Bar = pbdl3
- _____ = 65.5 g/cm2
- 12
- 3
- Iyy=Izz=0.935 x 3.4 x 2 x 10.7

-
- Next, relate a Mars Bar to other shapes and solids. If a Mars Bar is a
- cyclic quadrilateral, the equation of the circle is:
- 2 2
- x + y = 30.98 ie r= 5.57
- 2 2
- area of the circle is Pi r = 97cm
- 3
- volume of the sphere = 723 cm
- 2
- curved surface area = 389 cm
-
- If a Mars Bar is an elliptic quadrilateral, choose ellipse to have a
- semi-major axis of 6cm and a semi-minor axis of 2cm, then the equation of the
- ellipse is:
- 2 2
- x y
- _ + _ = 1
-
- 36 4
- 3
- and the volume of the solid of revolution is approximately 50.17cm
-
- In instances where there is little inducement to use a coil, a Mars Bar
- may be used as a Lecher Line. To achieve an impedance of 50 ohms (well,
- why not?): 50

- 135
- A+B=5.4 x 10 = 12.4cm.
-
- The choice of A and B is left to you, but a section similar to that of
- an economy size pack of Lemsip should do nicely.
-
- Conclusion
- ----------
-
- If you centre feed the Mars Bar using a Gamma match of one quarter
- Mars Bar ie using it as a half wave dipole, the resonant frequency of the
- Bar is:
- 9
- 1.4 x 10 Hz
-
- Unfortunately, this does not fall within any of the IARU Region 1
- Amateur Bands, therefore your original assumption is correct (which was
- that perhaps a Twix may have a higher resonant frequency).
