  8.      These diskettes contain graphic images created for your
  9. personal, non-commercial, publications, whether they be notes,
  10. memos, newsletters, or greeting cards. Anyone desiring to use these
  11. images in their commercial publications should contact Grin
  12. Graphics at 903-586-6150, for rates and rights.  If and when you
  13. register, you will be placed on our mailing list for new and
  14. special clip art packages.

  16.         This Sampler contains 50 images from the Grin Graphics Volume
  17. #1 collection. The complete Volume #1 package contains 233 images numbered
  18. 001.xxx - 233.xxx. If you order you will receive a printed index of all
  19. images along with 1 year free "Grinner" access to our BBS which has over
  20. 80,000 files available for download.

  28.                            WHAT'S NEW
  29.  
  30.      The basic reason for sending out the update is to inform users
  31. of the changes at Grin Graphics and show them the new ways and
  32. reasons to register.
  33. 1. You can now order using your Visa or Mastercard.
  34.    Voice (903)586-6150  Data: (903)589-0042 or by sending in the
  35.    order form. We still accept checks.
  36. 2. From now on only U.S. Funds can be accepted. I got some stuff I
  37.    couldn't even read, and my bank charged $5.00 to exchange it.
  38. 3. We no longer distribute any format except PCX and WPG. Very few
  39.    registrations come in requesting other than these.
  40. 4. Registered Users, will now receive a complete pictorial index of
  41.    Volume #1 images, allowing easy identification and selection of
  42.    the many images available.
  43. 5. Registered users now have free access to the "Grin and Share It"
  44.    Bulletin Board. This board was set up to support Grin Graphics
  45.    and to give Grin Graphics users a friendly environment to
  46.    exchange information and communicate with other users. You do
  47.    not have to be a registered user to access the BBS but only
  48.    registered users are allowed full access. It will also allow
  49.    vendors to D/L the newest versions available and get direct
  50.    information from the authors. (BBS) 24 hours a day 7 days a week
  51. 6. We no longer even attempt to do custom work except on a local
  52.    basis. Deadlines and different artistic visions don't work well
  53.    over long distance.
  54.                    USING GRIN GRAPHICS IMAGES
  55.  
  56.    All Grin Graphics clip art is compressed into self extracting
  57. zip-files.
  58. The easiest way to get going is to copy the "*.EXE" file from this
  59. diskette to the directory on your hard drive where you wish to keep
  60. your art.

  62. Example:  COPY A:\PCX1.EXE C:\CLIPART
  63.  
  64. Go to the clipart directory on your hard disk and type the first
  65. letters of the "*.EXE" file:
  66.  
  67. Example for PCX1.EXE;    TYPE    "PCX1"  then press ENTER
  68.  
  69. NOTE: ANY FILE WITH "PCX?.EXE IS A SELF EXTRACTING ZIP FILE!
  70.       IT DOES NOTHING EXCEPT DECOMPRESS THE HIGHLY PACKED PCX
  71.       IMAGES.

  73. The file will automatically decompress into separate clip art
  74. images numbered in the following manner; 024.PCX, 057.PCX etc..
  75. Make sure you have plenty of room on your hard drive, some of these
  76. are really monsters.

  78. After the files are decompressed erase the Grin Graphics "EXE" file
  79. from your hard drive and put away your floppy in a safe place. You
  80. never know when you might need to do this again.

  82.             ALL I GOT IS NUMBERED FILES....NOW WHAT?

  84.      Now that you have the images decompressed you need something
  85. to see them with. If you are planning on using these images in your
  86. paint program, word processor, or Desk-Top publishing program we
  87. suggest you enter that program now and follow it's instructions for
  88. loading, importing, placing, or pasting graphic images.
  89.      If you have a graphics file viewing utility such as VPIC or
  90. Graphics Workshop, (both of which you can d/l from the Grin and
  91. Share It Bulletin Board), and are available where all better
  92. shareware is sold; use these for the quickest way to see what
  93. you've got.

  102.      Once decompressed you may load the individual images into your
  103. word processor, paint, or desktop publishing program. Grin graphics
  104. PCX images are compatible with almost all programs that are capable
  105. of using the PCX format; WPG in WordPerfect and a few others.
  106.  
  107.                           OTHER FORMATS
  108.      Grin Graphics is no longer distributed in the nine or ten
  109. different formats that we once tried to maintain. PCX  and WPG
  110. seem to be the current format of choice and PCX is compatible
  111. with almost all programs using graphic images. If you must have
  112. a special format get a graphic image conversion utility that will
  113. change the PCX image into what you are needing. One of the best
  114. we have seen is a shareware program called "Graphics Workshop". If
  115. you cannot find it in your area you can download it from the Grin
  116. and Share It bulletin board described later in this document. There
  117. are also several commercial utilities for doing this; HiJaak for example.
  118. A fairly new conversion program for windows that seems to be getting
  119. great reviews is "Paint Shop Pro". It is a shareware product so it
  120. won't cost an arm and a leg to try.

  122.                   The "Why's" of Grin Graphics
  123.  
  124. Why so big?
  125.  
  126.      Grin Graphics images are large, most of them anyway. When we
  127. got our first computer system, all we had was a nine pin dot matrix
  128. printer. It was almost impossible to find graphics images that fit
  129. where we wanted them to fit without having to scale the image which
  130. caused horrible distortion and usually unprintable graphics. We
  131. discovered that if you created a graphic larger than you needed,
  132. then reduced it's size, it would retain most of it's definition,
  133. and sometimes even improve in its print quality. By making the
  134. images large they printed well on 9 pin or even 300 dpi laser
  135. printers.

  137. Why create such stuff?
  138.  
  139.      Another sad fact we discovered was that there was very little,
  140. almost none in fact, clip art that was targeted for non-business
  141. publications. There were lots of office scenes, telephones, stop
  142. signs, etc., but where could you find a frog sitting at a bar
  143. drinking a bottle of 100 proof fly juice? Where could you find a
  144. kitten in a toilet bowl, a puppy in a box or a fat man blowing a
  145. trumpet? We have filled that void. We hope you enjoy our Graphics
  146. as much as we enjoy making them available to you.

  148. Why register?
  149.  
  150.      If and when you register you will receive another diskette
  151. chock full of more Grin Graphics images. You'll receive a printed
  152. pictorial index of all volume #1 images for easy location and
  153. identification of the image you need. You'll have free access to
  154. the Grin and Share It Bulletin board which has been set up for your
  155. support and contact with the Grin Graphics Company, with direct
  156. access to Charles Miles, the artist of Grin Graphics images. Not
  157. only do you get all of this but you also get that good feeling
  158. inside knowing that you are supporting the shareware concept.

  167. About the BBS.....
  168.  
  169.         We have set up a bulletin board for our users called "Grin
  170. and Share It. Our plan is not to make this some gigantic BBS with
  171. hundreds of users. We want it big and only for those into DTP or using
  172. Grin Graphics. Here you get some of the utilities you might need, get in
  173. touch with other Grin Graphics users, and to get the newest updates and
  174. or reports about Grin Graphics clip art or other programs.
  175.         It is also here for the shareware vendor who wishes to distribute
  176. Grin Graphics products. If you are a vendor you should leave a comment
  177. to the SYSOP stating that you are a vendor and how you plan to distribute
  178. Grin Graphics. Also, if you are another BBS please let us know your BBS
  179. name and it's number. Let us know so we can ship you the entire shareware
  180. distribution package.
  181.         While we do allow any and all access to the board, we only allow
  182. full access to registered Grin Graphics users or BBS supporters.
  183. If you are already a registered user just call the BBS and once your
  184. registration has been verified you will receive full access also.

  186. A note to Vendors.....
  187.  
  188.         Grin Graphics Clip art is distributed in two different packages;
  189. a catalog distribution pack and a BBS distribution pack.
  190.  
  191. Catalog Version: Consists of two diskettes containing images 001-158.
  192.                  These should not be sold as separate items.
  193.  
  194. BBS Version: Consists of one diskette with assorted images. This packet
  195.              was made smaller in order to encourage BBS users to download
  196.              the file. This does not restrict you from also carrying the
  197.              full catalog version on your board; you may carry both.
  198.  
  199. Grin Graphics may not be broken, separated, or combined with other clip
  200. images unless approved by Grin Graphics. This however does not include
  201. shareware packages as long as Grin Graphics is maintained as a separate
  202. and individual program within that package.

  204. Catalog distributors are allowed to use Grin Graphics images in their
  205. catalog illustrations only if the illustration is in direct contact with
  206. the Grin Graphics description or a special note is listed somewhere in the
  207. catalog documentation letting users know where the clip art came from and
  208. how they can obtain it.
