  8. NCSA Mosaic for the X Window System can be used on most UNIX-based workstations
  9. (e.g., Sun SPARC, IBM RS/6000, SGI, DEC). 
  10.  
  11. NOTE: If you are using a Sun workstation with OpenWindows, warnings may be
  12. displayed when you start up NCSA Mosaic. They are not serious, and the program
  13. should start with no lost functionality. When you have NCSA Mosaic working, go
  14. to the Help menu and select the On FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). In the
  15. resulting window, select Something is broken. This document addresses the
  16. warning messages.

  18. Other Software You Need for Full Functionality 
  19.  
  20. NCSA Mosaic uses external viewers to display the variety of data file formats
  21. (images, video, audio, PostScript) on the Internet. For NCSA Mosaic to display
  22. these files, the external viewers listed below are recommended. (Other viewers
  23. are available and may be used.)

  25. If you need information about installing external viewers, talk with your local
  26. system administrator. In general, you need to uncompress, untar, and compile the
  27. files obtained from the anonymous FTP servers. Not all viewers work well with
  28. all machines. The README file in the software directory usually contains
  29. information about hardware compatibility.

  31. Select Manual from the Help menu for additional information about viewers.

  33. ghostview 
  34.  
  35. ghostview is the user interface to the ghostscript viewer for PostScript
  36. ``typeset'' documents. ghostview may be obtained from the UIUC anonymous FTP
  37. server (uxc.cso.uiuc.edu). Download the following files:

  43. mpeg-play 
  44.  
  45. mpeg-play displays MPEG-format animation sequences and video clips. mpeg-play
  46. may be obtained from the University of California at Berkeley's anonymous FTP
  47. server (toe.cs.berkeley.edu). Download the following file:

  51. showaudio and metamail 
  52.  
  53. showaudio is a shell script that can play several audio formats on several
  54. platforms and is part of the metamail multimedia mail toolkit. metamail
  55. processes multimedia documents in the MIME format. Obtain metamail from
  56. Bellcore's anonymous FTP server (thumper.bellcore.com). Download the following
  57. file (where x refers to the specific version currently available):

  63. xdvi is a viewer for documents in the DVI format produced by TeX. The xdvi

  71. xv is an image display and manipulation utility for GIF, JPEG, TIFF, and several
