- SAM AND MAX HIT THE ROAD by LucasArts Entertainment
- Previewed by Ross Erickson
-
- No one company but LucasArts has had such a string of such good adventure
- games in a long time. The Secret of Monkey Island series, Day of the
- Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis are all highly enjoyable
- adventures and the sales of these games bears this out. LucasArts is
- preparing to continue this legacy with the release of their next wacky
- adventure entitled Sam and Max Hit the Road based on the very successful
- 'adult' cartoon written by Steve Purcell.
-
- In Sam and Max (S&M...<G>), the story takes place around the disappearance
- of Bruno the Bigfoot and his girlfriend, Trixie the Giraffe-Necked Woman.
- The freelance police partners Sam and Max are called in to track down the
- missing sasquatch and his mate. For reference purposes, Sam is a dog
- turned into "Sam Spade" and Max is his high strung, caustically sarcastic
- sidekick rabbit. Their adventure to solve the mysterious disappearance
- of Bruno and Trixie takes them through the nation's lesser known sideshow
- road attractions - attractions such as The World's Largest Ball of Twine,
- the Celebrity Vegetable Museum, and Mount Rushmore Prehistoric Bungee
- Cavalcade and Tar Pit Slide (ED. - WOW! My kind of place! PAAAAARRRRTY!).
-
- As you can tell from the accompanying screenshots, Steve Purcell has a very
- vivid and cartoon-driven imagination. This game really reminds me of the
- Bullwinkle cartoons. There's wacky graphics and humor intended for the
- kids, but as I've gotten older, I've recognized the subtle adult verbal
- humor and situational comedy. The same is most definitely true for S&M.
- Fans of The Simpson's, Ren and Stimpy, and even perhaps reformed Beavis
- and Butthead viewers will most certainly enjoy this new wacky adventure.
- The game features the familiar LucasArts icon menu interface, but it's a
- bit modified in S&M. Instead of occupying a substantial part of the
- screen, the menu icons, featuring verbs, dialog boxes, and inventory
- items, will pop up as needed throughout the game. This gives much more
- room to the graphic artists to complete their work with a full 'canvas'.
-
- Sam and Max should be shipping by mid November.
