  10.  Thank you for purchasing the Monopoly Deluxe Computer Game.  This text
  11.  file contains supplemental information which is not included in the
  12.  game manual.
  13.  
  14.  Printing this file:
  15.  If you have a printer attached to your computer system, you may print
  16.  this file by: 1) Importing the NOTES.TXT file from this disk into a
  17.  word processing program, 2) Copying the file to the printer device, or  
  18.  to the printer port in use. Consult your product manuals for specific
  19.  instructions on printing this file.

  22.  MANUAL ERRATA:
  23.  -------------
  24.  
  25.  o To place a building on a monopoly, use the keyboard sequence <CTRL-H>,
  26.    not <CTRL-P> as listed in the manual. (Houses and hotels may also be
  27.    bought by selecting a property and accessing the Deed Window).
  28.  
  29.  o The manual incorrectly lists the computer player levels as: Calculator,
  30.    XT Clone, and 386Mhz PC. The list should instead read: Calculator, XT
  31.    Clone and 386/33Mhz. You may set a computer player to the "386/33Mhz"
  32.    level even on XT or AT class machines.
  33.

  35.  Keyboard Keys:
  36.  -------------
  37.  Keyboard key names which are placed between lesser than and greater than
  38.  symbols, for instance <Enter>, signify keypresses. When the reader sees
  39.  <TAB>, he or she should interpret this to mean "press the key labeled
  40.  'Tab'." <Ctrl-TAB> should be interpreted as "press the key labeled 'Ctrl'
  41.  while pressing the key labeled 'TAB'."
  42.

  44.  QUICK START:
  45.  -----------
  46.  
  47.  The player may skip the introduction song and dance by pressing the
  48.  escape key, <ESC>.
  49.  
  50.  To begin a new game, choose "New Game" from the game menu with the mouse,
  51.  or, use <F1> to access the menu with the keyboard. Alternatively, one 
  52.  may press <Ctrl-N> (default key assignment) to start a new game.
  53.  
  54.  Click on the tokens you wish to bring into the game with the mouse, or,
  55.  using the keyboard, press the <TAB> key to select a token and <SPACE> to 
  56.  include it. Players will roll in the order the tokens were chosen.  Once
  57.  the tokens have been chosen, click on the Start button to begin the game. 
  58.  
  59.  The Monopoly Deluxe Computer Game requires a minimum of 2 players although
  60.  one of these players may be a computer player, allowing for a one human - 
  61.  one computer player game. The game allows a maximum of 8 players even
  62.  though there are 10 tokens to choose from.

  65.  RECONFIGURING:
  66.  -------------
  67.  
  68.  After installing the program, you may reconfigure the Monopoly Deluxe
  69.  Computer Game at any time by using the SETUP program found within the
  70.  program's directory.
  71.

  73.  ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
  74.  -------------------
  75.  
  76.  The following features were added after the manual went to press:
  77.  
  78.  o The Status Window includes "You are here" information, in addition to the
  79.    cash, liquid assets, available assets, total assets, and monopolies.
  80.    When the Status Window is in "You are here" mode, the current position of
  81.    the player's token is listed in the window (e.g. "Boardwalk"). This
  82.    option provides a handy means to quickly find the current player's token
  83.    in a game with a large number of players.  If the lock is activated, the
  84.    player's token will flash, indicating its position, whenever the player's
  85.    turn comes up.
  86.  
  87.    The different Status Windows are selected by activating the rotate
  88.    button, just to the right of the Status Type display (see manual).
  89.  
  90.  o Cash Transfer - When trading cash between players or the bank, a window
  91.    will appear which allows the player to choose a base dollar amount, from
  92.    $1 to $500. To increase the amount, click the mouse on the right side
  93.    of the bill icon, and to decrease, click on the left side. Then, move
  94.    the slider to the appropriate range for the transfer. Alternatively, the
  95.    exact dollar amount may be entered directly into the Transfer Amount
  96.    Window.

  98.  o House Auction - The houses involved in an auction are displayed above
  99.    each player involved in the auction, the player may click on these houses
  100.    to choose between available building sites. When a house is won in an
  101.    auction it will be automatically placed at the site which was listed
  102.    above the highest bidding player.
  103.  
  104.  o Show Individual Player Ownership - A player may indicate his ownership
  105.    on the board at any time by activating his token, when displayed in the
  106.    Player Turn Window. Once set, the owned properties will remain shaded
  107.    until the player selects the token again.
  108.

  110.  KEYBOARD NOTES:
  111.  --------------
  112.  
  113.  The following information may be of help to individuals who intend to
  114.  play the Monopoly Deluxe Computer Game without a mouse:
  115.  
  116.                        Default Keyboard Settings
  117.                ---------------------------------------- 
  118.                 <F1> = Access the program menu.
  119.              <Space> = Acts as a mouse click. 
  120.        <Shift-Space> = Acts as a mouse double-click
  121.                <Tab> = Switches between buttons or icons.
  122.            <Alt-Tab> = Switches between windows.   
  123.                <ESC> = Close current window (except permanent windows).
  124.              <Enter> = Activate menu item or Roll Dice.
  125.          Arrow Keys  = Used to move the Selection Indicator within       
  126.                        a window, or to move between menu options.
  127.  
  128.  In summary, when using the keyboard, the player will need to use <ALT-TAB>
  129.  to activate the desired window, and then <Tab> to move the Selection
  130.  Indicator (appears as an outline around a selection) to the desired item.
  131.  The arrow keys (left arrow, right arrow, up arrow and down arrow) may be
  132.  used to move the Selection Indicator within a Selection Area.
  133.  
  134.  Once the Selection Indicator outlines the desired selection, <Space> is
  135.  used to make the selection (e.g. choose token) or <Alt-Space> to activate
  136.  the selection (e.g. open token's portfolio window).
  137.  
  138.  Menu commands are selected by using <F1> to bring up the menu, then the
  139.  arrow keys to move between menu options, and finally <Enter> to select
  140.  the highlighted option.
  141.  
  142.  
  143.  ADVANCED USERS:
  144.  --------------
  145.  
  146.  Advanced users who wish to reconfigure the keyboard controls and some
  147.  other game features may do so by editing the MP.INI text file.
  148.  
  149.  Users may also increase the available memory used by the program by
  150.  including the following option to the MONOPOLY.BAT file: MEM=1. Upon
  151.  exiting the program, the user will be informed with a suggested
  152.  number for use with the MEM option. Inserting this number into the
  153.  MONOPOLY.BAT file will result in the program operating at optimum
  154.  performance.

  157.  MISC:
  158.  ----
  159.  
  160.  There are extensive credits available from the About Monopoly Deluxe menu
  161.  option. After the legal notice, the credits may be skipped at any time
  162.  by pressing the escape key, <ESC>.
  163.

  165.  TROUBLESHOOTING:
  166.  ---------------
  167.  
  168.  Before attempting to install the software, please make sure that your
  169.  computer system meets the system requirements as defined on the box
  170.  cover. Your system must have a hard drive, VGA graphics card and monitor,
  171.  a machine with a 286-type microprocessor or better and atleast 640k of
  172.  computer system RAM. 
  173.  
  174.  Please note that the screen will blank out while the Monopoly Deluxe
  175.  Computer Game is loading, on some slower machines, loading may take up
  176.  to 45 seconds.  If the Monopoly board does not appear after a couple
  177.  minutes, there may not be enough of the computer's 640k base memory
  178.  available to run the program.
  179.  
  180.  If the program does not load:
  181.  
  182.  o Please make sure your hard drive has adequate storage space. If there
  183.    are less than 41 files in the Monopoly path, some files may not have
  184.    been installed, you may need to free up more space on the hard drive
  185.    before reinstalling the Monopoly Deluxe Computer Game.
  186.  
  187.  o If the program is configured to use sound effects and music, please
  188.    reconfigure the program to use sound effects but "no music hardware".
  189.    If the program operates successfully with this configuration, you may
  190.    need to free up more system memory before changing the settings to
  191.    get music.
  192.  
  193.  o If the program will not load when configured without music, type
  194.    "MP" at the DOS prompt while in the Monopoly path. If the program
  195.    runs, you will need to free up more system memory before using the
  196.    MONOPOLY command, or reconfigure the program for "No sound effects",
  197.    and "No Music".
  198.  
  199.  If you experience mouse problems:
  200.  
  201.  o If the program loads without a mouse pointer, please check that a
  202.    Microsoft (tm) compatible mouse driver version 6.24 or greater is
  203.    loaded and running. The program will can be run without a mouse, but
  204.    the player will need to use the keyboard to carry out all game commands.
  205.  
  206.  o If the a mouse pointer is visible on-screen but does not move under
  207.    the control of the mouse, there may be a software conflict between
  208.    the mouse driver and a sound driver.  In this case, try running the
  209.    program without the use of sound or music. If the program then works
  210.    you may need to try using different sound drivers or reconfiguring
  211.    your sound hardware.
