- 1. Tips for the installation:
- ****************************************************************
-
- ******** ISSUES WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0 INSTALLATION ********
-
- - Internet Explorer 4.0 requires certain video drivers to properly
- install. If it will not install then quit the installation and
- install the Intel Indeo drivers from the Installation disc:
-
- <CD-ROM drive letter>:\indeo4\ivi_nt95.exe
-
- After the Indeo drivers are installed reboot your machine and
- reinstall Internet Explorer by running the installer at:
-
- <CD-ROM drive letter>:\Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0\ie4setup.exe
-
- If Internet Explorer 4.0 still will not install then you must use
- the full installation version of Internet Explorer 4.0. It is
- located on the Installation disc at
-
- <CD-ROM drive letter>:\Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 - Full Install\ie4inst.exe
-
- *****************************************************************
-
-
- - The X-Files Unrestricted Access requires installation of QuickTime
- and the QuickTime Browser plug-in. This must be done manually AFTER
- the successful installation of Internet Explorer 4.0.
-
- A version of QuickTime is located on the installation disc at
-
- <cd-rom drive letter>:\qt\qteasy32.exe
-
- Again, make sure that you install QuickTime AFTER the installation of
- Internet Explorer 4.0.
-
- To install QuickTime and the QuickTime Browser plug-in, run
- qteasy32.exe.
-
-
- ***********IMPORTANT***********
-
- During the install of the Quicktime browser plug-in be sure to
- select "Internet Explorer" and not "Netscape Navigator".
-
- Immediately afterward (on the next screen of the install), verify
- that the plug-in path points to the version of Internet Explorer
- just installed.
-
- If you previously had Internet Explorer 3 installed, the Quicktime
- installer may try to place the plug-in there. The plug-in MUST go in
- the Internet Explorer 4 plug-ins folder.
-
- The path can be changed by clicking on the Browse button and typing
- in a new path.
-
- For the latest version of Quick Time, please check
-
- http://quicktime.apple.com
-
- - Scan your hard drive before the installation.
- From the Start menu, select the Accessories group and then the System
- Tools group. Click the ScanDisk icon to start.
-
- - Hard drive space.
- Make sure you have sufficient free hard drive space for the
- installation. Microsoft recommends that you have at least 23Mb free
- hard drive space in addition to the requirements of the application
- being installed, to allow for the correct operation of the Windows
- virtual memory.
-
- - Restart the system once before installing The X-Files Unrestricted
- Access.
- It is always a good idea to restart your system before installing
- any software. This can refresh the system memory and eliminate
- unnecessary problems which may appear during the installation.
-
- - Temporarily disabling other applications.
- If you have any TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) applications
- (e.g. on-access anti-virus software) or Windows screen savers running
- in the background, please temporarily disable them. You can re-enable them
- again after the installation. If you have other Windows applications
- running in the background, please close those which you are not using.
-
- - Checking your system hardware.
- Please check your system hardware and make sure your machine
- is functioning properly. Any IRQ or DMA device conflicts may
- create system instability, which will prevent the application
- from functioning normally.
-
- - Startup folder icon incorrect.
- The icon for "Fact File" sometimes displays incorrectly. To
- correct this, follow the following steps:
-
- 1) go to Start menu / Settings / Taskbar
- 2) select the "Start Menu Programs" tab
- 3) click on "Advanced"
- 4) click on "Startup"
- 5) right click on file "The X-Files Unrestricted Access Fact File"; select "Properties"
- 6) click "Shortcut" tab
- 7) click "Change Icon"
- 8) click "OK" twice
-
- - Do not install directly over a previous installation.
- If the application is installed over a previous installation to
- the same directory without removing the previous install, the following
- error is encountered at 48% of the file transfer: "An error occurred
- during the move data process: -623." This will occur because FactFile
- is running in the background. It is necessary to uninstall the previous
- installation, including FactFile, completely. For further instructions
- on completely removing FactFile, see section 6 of this readme file.
-
- - To add additional Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 components.
- You must uninstall the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
- which comes on the CD-ROM, and download a version of the application
- from the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 site, in order to add
- additional components. If you encounter a problem doing so, or if you
- do not have Internet access, then go to the folder named Microsoft Internet
- Explorer 4.0 - Full Install, on disc one of The X-Files Unrestricted Access,
- and install using the file named ie4inst.exe.
-
-
- ****************************************************************
- 2. Tips for Running The X-Files Unrestricted Access:
- ****************************************************************
-
- - Free up more memory for The X-Files Unrestricted Access.
- Close all unnecessary applications running in the background.
-
- As well as avoiding possible conflicts from other programs,
- closing other running applications will also help prevent Windows
- from accessing the hard drive Virtual Memory swap file and affecting
- the speed of The X-Files Unrestricted Access, especially on systems
- with the minimum RAM requirement of 16Mb.
-
- Even if you close all running applications, there may be a number of
- other tasks running in the background. Some of these are displayed as
- icons in the System Tray on the Windows Taskbar, and others are not
- immediately obvious.
-
- If, after trying the above suggestions, you are still experiencing
- performance problems, you can experiment with closing these tasks,
- although it is possible that closing some of them could cause your
- computer to crash and require restarting.
-
- You can usually close most System Tray tasks by right-clicking or left-
- clicking on their Tray icon, and then selecting Close, Exit, Quit or
- Suspend (depending upon the task).
-
- After this, to see what 'hidden' tasks are still running, from the
- Windows 95 desktop, carefully press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys together
- ONCE - this will display a list of active tasks. You can free up
- system resources by closing these one at a time by clicking on a task
- and then selecting the 'End Task' button. On most systems, you will be
- able to close almost all tasks except 'Explorer' (which you should leave
- running).
-
- - Special software that is not supported.
- This program does not support special software that assigns custom
- functions to simulate the left, right, or center mouse button.
- These functions should not be used while running the application.
-
- - Windows 95 taskbar overlapping the program screen.
- If you find that the Windows 95 taskbar is overlapping the program
- screen, you can hide the taskbar by doing the following:
-
- i) Click the Start button
- ii) Choose Settings
- iii) Click Taskbar icon
- iv) Check the Auto Hide box
- v) Click the OK button
-
- To see the taskbar again, move the mouse pointer to the edge of
- your screen where your taskbar is located.
-
- - Minimizing Microsoft Office Manager.
-
- If you have Microsoft Office installed (either the Standard or the
- Professional version), you should minimize the Microsoft Office
- Manager (MOM) toolbar while running this program. The presence
- of the toolbar can cause colors to be distorted.
-
- ****************************************************************
- 3. CD-ROM Issues:
- ****************************************************************
-
- - Errors reading from the CD-ROM drive.
- If your system has errors reading from the CD-ROM drive, please
- perform the following checks:
-
- i) make sure the disc surface is clean
-
- ii) Examine the surface of the disc for any visible scratches
-
- iii) check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive
- or contact the company that supplied the drive in order
- to determine if your CD-ROM drive is functioning properly
-
- ****************************************************************
- 4. Video Display Issues:
- ****************************************************************
-
- - Basic display requirement.
- The basic display requirement is 640 x 480 running in 16-bit color.
-
- - Problems when not running in 16-bit color.
-
- The X-Files Unrestricted Access is optimized for 16-bit color.
- If running The X-Files Unrestricted Access in 24-bit
- and 32-bit color mode, there may be problems with movie playback
- and graphics, such as skipped frames and palette flashes.
-
- If there is any problem with the display, consider the following
- solutions:
-
- i) Try setting the screen resolution to 640 x 480 16-bit color.
- For most graphics cards, the screen resolution and color depth
- can be changed from the "Settings" tab of the "Display" control
- panel.
-
- ii) Update the video card drivers. Make sure you are using the most
- recent video driver release for Windows 95 from your video
- card manufacturer; earlier releases of video drivers may not
- be optimized for best display performance. Please consult
- your video card user's manual on how to obtain the latest
- driver. Most of the video card manufacturers provide BBS,
- WWW and FTP sites for downloading updated drivers.
-
- - 3D Evidence (QuickTime VR) image glitches.
- If you experience graphical glitches or other image corruption
- of the 3D evidence objects, you can try changing your QuickTime
- Draw Method settings as follows:
-
- 1. From the Start menu, select Settings/Control Panel/QuickTime 32
- 2. Click on the "More" button
- 3. Click on the "Video" tab
- 4. In the "Draw Method" box, select "Video Driver"
- 5. Click on the "Apply" button
- 6. On the "Do you want to apply modifications?" dialogue box, click "Yes"
- 7. Close the Control Panel and run The X-Files Unrestricted Access
-
- ****************************************************************
- 5. Audio Issues:
- ****************************************************************
-
- Please note that The X-Files Unrestricted Access requires a Windows
- 95 supported 16-bit sound card, and the sound card must be using
- native Windows 95 drivers. Using DOS-mode sound card drivers for
- Windows 95 may result in incompatibilities. Please check your
- sound card manual or sound card manufacturer's web site for details.
-
- - Looping audio.
- On some systems, during the access to the CD-ROM drive the
- background music may delay in looping. This is considered
- normal, since some system hardware may not be optimized for
- multi-channel data transfer.
-
- - Conflicts with other applications.
- Audio problems can have many causes. Other applications that
- play sounds may interrupt sounds in this program.
-
- Most sound cards cannot play sounds from two different
- applications simultaneously. In severe cases, playing sounds from
- two different applications simultaneously can result in a
- system crash or freeze. However, a few applications that play
- sounds, such as some screen savers and desktop toys may remove
- audio capability from all other Windows applications; if this
- is the case, you may see this program start up without any
- sound. If you suspect you have such a situation, quit the program
- and turn off these applications before launching this program.
-
- - Audio driver problems.
- If you experience problems with audio, you may need to update
- your sound card drivers. It is always a good idea to use the
- most recent Windows 95 drivers available. Contact the manufacturer
- of your sound card to find out how to obtain new drivers, or check
- their web site.
-
- - Sounds play, but not very well.
- Sounds that are distorted or "fuzzy" have several possible
- causes. It is possible that the software settings on your sound
- card are causing distortion. For example, if the sound card
- volume or "WAVE file output" is set to near its maximum, it will
- produce amplification distortion, just as it would on a stereo
- system. To find out how to change your sound card settings,
- check the documentation that came with your sound card.
-
- - Sound does not play at all.
- If you do not hear any sounds, make sure that the volume for
- your speakers is set to an audible level.
-
- If the volume is set to an audible level, you can perform a
- simple test by using the Windows Media Player to play a .WAV
- file. If you still hear no sounds at all, something may be wrong
- with your sound card setup. Check your sound card IRQ and DMA
- settings, make sure those settings are not in conflict with
- other hardware devices. Also, check to see that the drivers are
- installed correctly and, if necessary, reinstall them. Refer to
- the documentation that came with your sound card for more
- information on installing audio drivers.
-
- ****************************************************************
- 6. Uninstall Issues:
- ****************************************************************
- - Uninstalling FactFile.
- If it is currently active, it will be necessary to uninstall
- FactFile specifically before The X-Files Unrestricted Access
- can be completely uninstalled. There are three ways to do this:
- (1) reboot after uninstalling The X-Files Unrestricted Access;
- (2) remove FactFile by clicking Ctrl-Alt-Delete; select the FactFile
- entry and then click on "End Task".
- (3) within the Desktop Designer application, change the display
- interval to "Never."
-
- ****************************************************************
- 7. In Case of a System Crash:
- ****************************************************************
- - Re-setting system colors to Windows default settings.
- If there is a system crash during use of the application, you can
- re-set your system colors to the Windows 95 default settings by
- going to Start menu and choosing Settings\Control Panels\Display.
- Click on Scheme, then scroll down to choose a Windows option.
-
- ****************************************************************
- 8. Long File Names:
- ****************************************************************
- - The X-Files Unrestricted Access uses the 32-bit protected-mode
- file system (long file names). If your CD-ROM drive is using DOS
- drivers for support under Windows 95, the system may not read
- long file names off of the CD-ROM disc.
-
- To find out what you have for file system:
- 1. From the Start menu, go to Settings\Control Panel\Systems\Performance
- 2. Under Performance Status, check the line that starts with
- "File System."
-
- Most Windows 95 systems use the 32-bit file system, which supports
- the long file name standard. The Windows 95 protected-mode file
- system is faster than the real-mode file system. Windows 95 will
- perform best if it is using 32-bit protected mode file system.
-
- Reasons that the long file name support is absent from Windows 95
- could be:
-
- Case 1. No native Windows 95 driver is installed for your CD-ROM
- drive. Your PC is using a real-mode CD-ROM device driver
- in DOS for Windows 95.
-
- Solution: Put REM in front of those lines related to your CD-ROM
- DOS driver in config.sys. Also REM out the MSCDEX.EXE command
- line in autoexec.bat. Then install the latest Windows 95
- CD-ROM driver for your CD-ROM drive.
-
- PLEASE CHECK YOUR SYSTEM MANUAL FOR DETAILS.
-
- Case 2. Incorrect or incomplete installation of your Windows 95
- CD-ROM driver.
-
- Solution: Please check your system manual for correct driver
- installation.
-
- Case 3. Virus (e.g., Boot Sector Virus) in system memory.
- Systems infected by viruses may lose support for 32-bit
- file system.
-
- Solution: Run a virus scanner to check your system. You can
- download the latest version of McAfee virus scanner
- from www.mcafee.com or a trial version of Norton
- AntiVirus from www.symantec.com
-
-
- ****************************************************************
- 9. Windows NT:
- ****************************************************************
- - The X-Files Unrestricted Access has not been tested for Microsoft
- Windows NT compatibility.
-
-
- ****************************************************************
- 10. Driver Compatibility
- ****************************************************************
-
- - The X-Files Unrestricted Access is designed to function with Windows 95
- compatible graphics cards, sound cards and modems. The drivers for
- these various devices are provided by the respective manufacturers,
- and may occasionally contain bugs or otherwise cause incompatibilities
- beyond our control.
-
- If you experience any problems, it is always recommended that you
- obtain up-to-date drivers, which will often remedy the problem. Almost
- every vendor makes their drivers available on their web site. If you
- are unsure of a web site URL for a particular hardware vendor, you can
- try accessing one of the general Windows software update sites such as:
