  18. We are currently happy VMS/Multinet/PMDF users.  I am working on the final
  19. stages of a networking proposal, and am specifying a "Network Operations"
  20. machine, to handle DNS, mailing lists, and other global networking tasks.
  21.  
  22. The problem is this: we want to use this machine to be a WAIS/Gopher server, to
  23. provide all sorts of neat services for our users.  I have been warned by a more
  24. WAIS-wise person than myself that the VMS/Multinet versions of WAIS/Gopher-type
  25. utilities are not as advanced as their UNIX counterparts, not fully
  26. implemented, etc.

  28. The question is: I'd like to buy an Alpha workstation to do the job.  VMS will
  29. be ready, I am told, long before OSF.  I really could buy just about anything
  30. to do this job, although I really like Multinet and PMDF.  What sort of
  31. disappointments will I be likely to face in terms of WAIS and other network
  32. services?  Is the public-domain availability of neat new toys going to always
  33. be a disappointment if I go with a Alpha/VMS box?
