- UNC-CH PAUPER PLAYERS PRESENT
- "LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS" NOVEMBER 19-21
-
- The UNC Pauper Players will be presenting the very different and funny
- musical _Little_Shop_of_Horrors_ on November 19, 20, and 21. Performances
- will begin at 8:00 pm in Old Playmakers Theatre on Cameron Street, with an
- additional matinee at 2:00 pm on November 21. General admission tickets are
- $5 and can be purchased at the Student Union Box Office or by calling the
- ticket salesperson at 929-4356.
-
- _Little_Shop_ is the seventh full scale production presented by Pauper
- Players. This student run group is the only musical theatre group at UNCand
- has become increasingly successful since its first production of _Grease_ in
- 1989. Other past shows include _Les_Miserables_, _Guys_and_Dolls_, and
- _Sweeney_Todd.
-
- The story for _Little_Shop_of_Horrors_ is taken from a low budget film shot
- in two days with Jack Nicholson in a cameo role. It was turned into an
- off-off Broadway musical in 1982, and two months later opened off Broadway
- for over 2,000 performances. The musical was then made into a movie
- starring Ellen Greene, who played the leading role of Audrey in the off
- Broadway production as well.
-
- This upbeat show is about a flower shop on Skid Row. A boy, Seymour,
- experiments with a rare plant to make it one that is different from any
- other plant imaginable. He wants to impress a girl named Audrey and
- succeeds when he becomes instantly rich and famous. However, Seymour runs
- into more complications with this plant than he ever dreamed. Mr. Mushnik,
- the shopowner, three "Doo-Wop Girls," and Audrey's mean dentist boyfriend
- help move the story along adding bits of humor here and there. So, it is a
- twisted love story with a surprise ending.
-
- Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who teamed up for Disney's hits
- _The_Little_Mermaid_ and _Beauty_and_the_Beast_, wrote the book and lyrics,
- and music respectively for _Little_Shop_Of_Horrors_. The unique comical
- melodies and lyrics set the light-hearted mood of the story. Some of the
- better known songs from the musical are the Motown sounding title track
- "Little Shop of Horrors" and the pretty duet "Suddenly Seymour."
-
- The Pauper Players production of _Little_Shop_Of_Horrors_, directed by Bing
- Cox, is one worth seeing. Cox is a drama student at UNC and has been
- involved in such theatre groups as North Carolina Theatre, Raleigh Little
- Theatre, and Theatre in the Park. He has also served as director and
- technical director for UNC Lab Theatre and was previously seen in
- Playmaker's Repertory Company's production of _Twelfth_Night_. Cox calls
- this production of _Little_Shop_ an intimate show with quality performances
- from its eight cast members.
