- GRADUATE EDUCATION CANDIDATES
-
-
-
- Professionals who are interested in pursuing master's degrees are
- invited to participate in the establishment and organization of a
- Colorado State University SURGE (State University Resources in
- Graduate Education) site in the Triangle area.
-
- WHAT IS SURGE?
-
- SURGE is an innovative method of delivering graduate education to
- working professionals who cannot attend regular on-campus classes.
- The SURGE program offers graduate degrees with NO on-campus
- residency requirements.
-
- SURGE was established by Colorado State University in 1967 as the
- first video-based graduate program of its kind in the country. An
- average of 80 courses are taught each semester through SURGE.
- Currently, over 600 students are enrolled at over 90 open and
- corporate sites throughout the nation. Over 350 students have
- completed graduate degrees through SURGE. SURGE IS NOT a
- 'correspondence' or 'study-at-your-own-pace' degree program. Regular
- on-campus courses, taught by Colorado State faculty, are videotaped in
- specially equipped classrooms. The tapes, along with handouts, are
- sent via UPS to participating site coordinators who make these tapes
- available to students, provide information about the program, supply
- registration forms, proctor exams, and return the tapes. Students
- interact with instructors through the use of electronic mail,
- facsimile (FAX), computer communication, surface mail, and telephone
- office hours for faculty.
-
- DEGREES OFFERED
-
- The primary emphasis of the SURGE program is to allow remote students
- to obtain a master's degree. Under certain circumstances, students
- with appropriate qualifications may be eligible to complete a second
- undergraduate degree through SURGE. Currently, SURGE offers courses
- for completing master's degrees in the following areas:
-
- Agricultural Engineering
- Business Administration (MBA)
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science
- Electrical Engineering
- Engineering Management
- Environmental Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Systems Engineering and Optimization
- MS with specialization in Management
- Mechanical Engineering
- Statistics
-
- A PH.D degree is also offered through SURGE with an on-campus
- residency requirement of at least two academic year semesters.
-
- GETTING INVOLVED
-
- Individuals interested in this program or those desiring more
- information are encouraged to respond by email. Suggestions for a
- 'site' for this program and a site coordinator will also be helpful.
- The establishment and success of this program depends entirely on
- interest.
-
- WHY SURGE?
-
- I am a 32-year-old Triangle professional who holds a B.A. in economics
- from Davidson College and an M.B.A from UNC-G. I have always excelled
- academically and truly believe that education should be a life-long
- pursuit. Over the last several years, I have decided that I would like
- to pursue an additional graduate degree for my own professional
- advancement; yet, I have discovered that the "great" Triangle
- universities' continuing education divisions (with the exception of
- MBAs) are woefully lacking and inflexible when it comes to
- offering graduate level education for highly motivated working
- professionals (i.e., those who have careers, children, and house
- payments and cannot 'up and quit' their jobs to fulfill on-campus
- residency requirements and attend daytime classes).
-
- Programs like SURGE offer an opportunity to overcome these obstacles
- and really make education a viable life-long pursuit. Colorado State
- University should be commended and applauded for its dedication to
- this program, its service to the nation, and its realization that
- worthwhile education does not end at 22 years of age.
