Very touching.  Now let us imagin another ending to the tale.  Mother
Matilda abandons poor Baby Blue and returns to the streets.  She dies at
age 27 from a combination of sexually transmitted diseases that she has
spread to thousands of others.

Baby Blue starts out life with massive medical complications.  The state
spends tens of thousands of dollars to make sure that she lives to an
age where she can be palmed off on a long succession of foster homes.
Baby Blue, now known as Ruby, acquires an early hands on working knowledge
of child abuse, sexual perversion, gourmet dining from garbage cans,
and the economics of pushing drugs.  By sixteen she is hardened and
street-wise, if not too literate, when she gets religion.  More precisedly,
she falls in with the Reverend Nehehmiah Scudder, a charismatic televangilist
with a taste for hot young black flesh.

Becoming a part of Nehemiah's entourage widens Ruby's horizons considerably.
She becomes "saved" and pure, at least as far as her public image is
concerned.  More importantly, she discovers the real joy of intellectual
discovery, and becomes a voracious reader.  She becomes the number two
person in Scudder's crusade to purify America.  They go into politics;
he is the figurehead, she is the driving force behind the movement. They
forge a political alliance between the religious right and the urban
underclass.  Scudder wins the last presidential election ever held in
the United States in 2008.  Ruby becomes the head of the Angels of the
Lord, the de facto federal law in the Theocracy.  The first concentration
camps are opened in 2013.  Richard Harter is shot while resisting arrest
for Unchristian activities in 2011. Aaron Hoffmeyer is arrested in 2014
and interned in The Mercy Of God camp for infidels.  Ruby becomes the
dominant personality in the regime, a cross between Torquemada and Beria,
with a touch of Hitler thrown in.  In 2027 she starts the Great War of God
to bring the rest of the world under The United Kingdom of God.  Nuclear
and biochemical weapons are used with great abandon by all sides; nuclear
winter ends the war in 2028.  By 2035 the human race is extinct.
