  25. Of course they couldn't.  It takes a large and prosperous society to
  26. support the hundreds of specialized skills necessary for the task you
  27. describe.  In order to accomplish what you ask you would need
  28. thousands of well fed people including miners, mining engineers,
  29. metalurgists, carpenters, smelters, machinists, electrical and
  30. mechanical engineers and technicians, potters, glass blowers,
  31. chemists, smiths, etc, etc, and (god forbid) probably some managers.
  32. You would also need a wide range of raw materials in addition to
  33. metalic ores.

  35. P.S.  Unless you are talking about a linear stepper motor (which I
  36. have never heard of) it is meaningless to specify the accuracy of a
  37. stepper motor in anything other than angular units.

  39. P.P.S. How about we put Derek on a desert island with the goal of
  40. producing something that makes sense.  It would be interesting to see
  41. if he could do it within his lifetime.
