  15. The following is an OFFICIAL request for discussion to create a
  16. newsgroup called sci.philosophy.language.  (At least in my mind) It
  17. supersedes a previous post I made requesting the creation of
  18. talk.philosophy.language.  It has been pointed out to me that a
  19. designation of sci might be more appropriate.

  21. The proposal is to create a group with the following parameters:

  23. Name of group:           sci.philosophy.language
  24. Mode:                    unmoderated
  25.  
  26. Charter:
  27.  
  28. Inasmuch as there exist groups like sci.philosophy.tech,
  29. talk.philosophy.misc, and comp.ai.philosophy which discuss various
  30. issues not directly relating to philosophy of language, and inasmuch
  31. as philosophy of language is an important and viable specialization
  32. within philosophy, I propose the creation of a group for facilitating
  33. discussion in this area.  Topics for discussion will include
  34. (minimally) discussions of interest for philosophy of language,
  35. philosophy of linguistics, theories of meaning and truth, reference,
  36. pragmatics, speech act theory, intensional semantics, (to some extent)
  37. language of thought, theories of names, demonstratives, works (past
  38. and current) in such topics, etc.---all the issues that could be part
  39. of a serious study of philosophy of language.

  41. It is thought that the existence of such a group would stimulate more
  42. discussion in the area of philosophy of language than (sporadically)
  43. occurs in the other groups.

  45. I understand that the normal procedure calls for a discussion period
  46. of some 30 days, after which a voting period would be initiated.  So
  47. let's start the discussion.
