  14.      DIGITAL NETWORKS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE

  16. Location: The Mitchener Institute, 222 St Patrick St, Toronto,
  17.           Ontario, Canada
  18.  
  19. Dates:    Friday 4th June and Saturday 5th June, 1993 (immediately
  20.           prior to the Society of Nuclear Medicine 40th Annual
  21.           Meeting)  [NB: The SNM meeting starts with Categorical
  22.           Seminars on Monday, 7th June.  Committee meetings are
  23.           scheduled for Sunday, 6th June]

  25. Description:   This two-day seminar will cover the problems and
  26.                costs associated with the introduction of PACS and
  27.                networks to nuclear medicine departments.  The
  28.                lecturers will be individuals who have had recent
  29.                experience in this area in both nuclear medicine
  30.                departments and other associated hospital
  31.                departments.  The course will be of particular
  32.                interest to physicists, computer engineers and
  33.                technologists who will be participating in the
  34.                introduction of networking to their department.
  35.                Emphasis will be placed upon practical solutions to
  36.                outstanding problems rather than academic
  37.                discussion of the subject matter.  Engineering
  38.                staff from major nuclear medicine computer vendors
  39.                will be encouraged to be present in order to
  40.                facilitate direct communication between users and
  41.                designers.  Time will be allotted to breakout
  42.                sessions devoted to specific topics.

  44. Objectives:    On completion of this course the attendee should
  45.                have a good grounding in the fundamental principles
  46.                of computer networks.  He/she should be able to
  47.                define their department's needs and outline
  48.                possible cost effective solutions.  He/she should
  49.                be able to discuss those needs with industry
  50.                representatives so that a suitable pathway to
  51.                successful installation of a network can be
  52.                established.  The attendee should be able to
  53.                recognize the sources of possible problems and know
  54.                where to find solutions to outstanding questions.
