- This year I have, in my fifth grade class, an eleven year old
- boy who has many handicapping conditions, Tourette's Syndrome
- being one of them. This is his first year in public school in a
- heterogeneous class comprised of other special education
- students, "regular ed" students, and gifted students. In the
- short span of two months I have seen remarkable progress made by
- this boy. This is the correct placement for him. The modeling provided
- by the other students has made a big impact on him. I think that this boy
- needs to be accepted as he is. He cannot control many of his
- behaviors and it is our job to educate those around him that he
- is a wonderfully bright child, making quite a contribution to
- our class. I believe that when he moves on to middle school where
- social pressure increase, it is incumbent upon the school to
- ensure his success. Other adolescents can learn much from this
- delightful young man. What better opportunity for kids to learn
- that all of us have strengths and weaknesses and that each of
- us must be treated with dignity.
-
- Good luck to your nephew! You can email me directly if you'd
- like.
