- This announcement just came through on another science list which I am on.
- Although it doesn't mention it here, the Med School at U of M has a 4-yr
- integrated degree pgm for folks who want to combine their MD studies with a MS,
- MA, or Ph.D. in some other field. This SST program looks like an interesting
- possible combination.
-
- BTW, this was my graduate school, & I thought it was very good. I knew 2
- fellow grad students who combined Ph.D.'s in Phil of Science w. MD degrees.

- Following is a short blurb on our new "STS" program (we call it SST).
- Hope this will be of general interest...

- Course of Study--Minor in Studies of Science and
- Technology, applicable to either master's or doctoral program.
-
- Curriculum--Studies of Science and Technology (SST) deals
- with a rapidly expanding field that seeks to understand the
- conceptual foundations, historical development, and social
- context of science and technology. SST faculty are drawn from
- six research or teaching units dedicated in whole or in part to
- the history and philosophy of science and technology:
- Philosophy, History of Science and Technology, History of
- Medicine, the Center for Philosophy of Science, the Center for
- Biomedical Ethics, and the Charles Babbage Institute for the
- History of Information Processing. The SST minor is designed
- for students from any major who desire to gain a deeper
- understanding of the nature and development of science and
- technology. It should be particularly valuable for students who
- are planning teaching careers in science or engineering, or those
- majoring in philosophy or in history of science and technology.
- It may also be of interest to students majoring history,
- sociology, or other related fields of study.
-
- The SST program provides introductory core courses in
- historiography and philosophy of science, followed by team-
- taught research seminars and other elective courses in four main
- research areas: models, theories and reality; physical science;
- biological and biomedical sciences; and science, technology, and
- society. Topics of the seminars will vary from year to year,
- depending upon faculty and student interest.
-
- Prerequisites for Admission--Admission to the minor in Studies
- of Science and Technology is contingent upon prior admission to
- the Graduate School and to a master's or doctoral program in
- a degree-granting department. Admission to the minor
- program is by permission of the director of graduate studies in
- SST.
-
- Minor Requirements--Master's students are required to take 12
- credits, which must include HSci 8111, Phil 8650, and one of
- the SST seminars (SST 8100, 8200, 8300, or 8400). Doctoral
- students are required to take 19 credits, which must include
- HSci 8111, Phil 8605, 3 credits in SST 8000, and two of the
- SST seminars (SST 8100, 8200, 8300, or 8400). Students may
- not use courses from their major departments to make up the
- remaining 12 or 19 credits.
-
- Language Requirements--None that are specific to the minor
- program.
-
- For Further Infromation and Applications--Contact the
- Director of Graduate Studies, Studies of Science and
- Technology, 309 Ford Hall, 224 Church Street SE, University of
- Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455, or call 612-625-6635.
