  15.                  Announcement of Maple V Release 2

  18. We are proud to announce the availability of a new version of Maple,
  19. Maple V Release 2.  Release 2 represents a major step forward in all
  20. capabilities of Maple.  We'd like to thank everyone, especially
  21. people from outside the Maple group who have contributed.
  22.  
  23. At this time Waterloo Maple Software is shipping Release 2 for the
  24. Sun 4/SPARC and DEC Unix systems.  We expect to complete ports to
  25. other Unix platforms by year end.
  26.  
  27. Release 2 incorporates a completely new user interface and many
  28. new graphical capabilities.  The new interface supports worksheets,
  29. a help browser, and outputs formulae in mathematical notation.
  30. High quality hardcopy output for worksheets is available in PostScript.
  31. The new interface for the X Window System follows Motif conventions
  32. and includes much improved editing capabilites.

  34. The new graphical capabilities include contour plots, implicit
  35. plots (2D and 3D), vector plots (2D and 3D), animation (2D and 3D),
  36. and basic support for text, polygons, color, lighting, etc.

  38. As with previous new versions of Maple, Maple V Release 2 also
  39. includes many new and improved mathematical capabilities.  A focus
  40. of this version has been given to fixing bugs, fixing design problems,
  41. and to improve the numerical capabilities, in particular,
  42. complex numeric arithmetic, numerical linear algebra, and numerical
  43. solutions to polynomials.
  44.  
  45. The new version contains approximately 700 new functions to the
  46. existing library, for a total of more than 2,500 functions.
  47. A detailed list of the new facilities and improvements, 
  48. with examples in Maple V Release 2, will be posted in a separate
  49. message on sci.math.symbolic.
