- Finally heard this refuted the other day, but I can't provide
- exact references.
-
- Buckley's Firing Line last Sunday had three guests, one from the
- Bush administration, Ira Glasser (sp? - head of the ACLU), and
- Buckley's lawyer.
-
- The subject of the show was "legal reform".
-
- When the administration guy said that the U.S. had the
- highest per capita lawyer rate in the world, the other two jumped
- on him hard.
-
- A recent study (maybe U. of Washington, I'm not sure) shows that
- in the area of per capita lawyers, U.S. is 35th in the world, below
- most European countries and below Japan.
-
- The confusion comes about because most lawyers in Japan can't
- argue in the courts, and the comparison showing that the
- U.S. has 200 times more lawyers than Japan does was specifically
- looking at lawyers in the courts.
-
- Japan has many lawyers (like the U.S. does) that work behind
- the scenes, in corporate Japan as opposed to those who make a living
- going to court. When you look at all the lawyers in Japan and all the
- lawyers in the U.S., as opposed to the ones who do courtroom
- work, Japan has a higher per capita lawyer level than the U.S. does.
