- I decided to check the latest data sheets from Cermetek in our VSMF microfilm
- library. It seems Jeff and I are both right.

- Cermetek makes a few DAA modules (Data Access Arrangements) that carry Part 68
- pre-approvals that convey FCC Part 68 approvals to the devices they are used
- in. Cermetek suggests the use of these DAA's to minimize registration delays
- and get your product to market quickly. These particular DAA's are expensive,
- however, and they suggest that they be replaced by other units they manufacture
- in your final FCC tested and approved design. These other units conform to
- the FCC Part 68 standards but still require registration.

- +++Try Cermetek at +1-408-752-5000. I've used a device called the CH1812
- +++which provides part 68 certification. It also includes the hybrid,
- +++incoming ring detect, and offhook circuitry -- these features are a
- +++side-effect of the certification requirements. The module actually
- +++comes with a sticker you attach to the outside of your finished
- +++product.

- According the the microfilm literature (which might be out of date), the
- CH1812A does not provide pre-approval. This is sad since this is the model
- that has shown up at hamfests for well less than $1. The Ch1810, CH1811, and
- CH1832 are the models that are pre-registered. The Ch1812A, 13, 15, 16, and 18
- are subsets that CONFORM to FCC Part 68 - but still require registration.

- I broke open the potting on a CH1812A and found that it was rather complex
- inside. I doubt if any single chip solution can provide the performance,
- surge protection, and isolation that these modules can provide. It is too
- bad that they cost far more than most inexpensive modems in small quantities.
