- In article <1992Nov5.000110.6050@mailer.cc.fsu.edu>, William Mayne quotes:
-
-
- >>Declaration of Religious Principle
-
- >>..The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and
- >>the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the
- >>best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the
- >>growing members.
-
- ...and then asks us:
-
- > So it is the BSA's policy to teach that atheists can't be good citizens?
-
- Maybe this is why we never resolve anything--The quoted text expresses that
- such a recognition is necessary to the best type of citizenship, which is
- merely an opinion of what attribute citizenship should have. Is does not say
- that other opinions are invalid or that those with other opinions are not
- "good citizens", as you so twist it. That material is an appeal and standard
- for membership.
-
- Will you not defend the right of association and freedom of speech? Shall we
- merge or destroy all religious or other private groups which set membership
- standards?
-
- > And people claim this isn't teaching bigotry?
-
- You sir, have not recently read the definition of "bigot". Nowhere above is
- intolerance for diverging views presented. In fact, your deliberate
- distortions and shrill argumentation suggests that you might turn the mirror
- on yourself.
-
-
- Here's one for you folks to ponder: The opinion has been expressed here (by
- others) that they do not want to start their own groups because the BSA is
- such a high-quality, exciting, successful, and attractive organization. Do
- you not think that the membership standards might have something to do with
- it?
