- I am looking for any help or advice I can get about a problem
- I am having with the quadricep muscles on both of my legs.
-
- Ever since a hard 20 km race four weeks ago, my quads have
- felt tired or "dead" with low-level, deep soreness. I have been
- a runner for about 14 years and I have been averaging 70 miles per
- week for several years. I race marathons and ultramarathons and I was
- gearing up to race a fast marathon in January.
- Two to four weeks before the race I had two very hard training
- weeks, which included hills at altitude. This potentially put
- me on the edge of being overtrained and the race could have been
- what pushed me over the edge.
-
- I do not experience any real pain the few times I have tried to run,
- but my quads feel fatigued, tight, with a low-level ache right from the
- start of the run. This condition does not seem to get better or worse
- as I run. I can find no specific locations on the muscles that are
- extremely sore, but with deep massage and manipulation can find soreness
- in many places.
-
- After reading two dozen books, talking to runners and a few doctors,
- I have only heard one person describe anything like I have.
- Dr. Timothy Noakes in "Lore of Running" describes symptoms of
- overtraining which includes persistent muscle soreness.
- Dr. Noakes says the problem is fairly common in elite runners and if
- the overtraining has progressed far enough may require six to eight
- weeks of rest to recover. He unfortunately does not define "rest".
- I assume it means no running, but am unsure if it includes non-impact
- activities such as cycling. I am very leary of not using the muscles
- at all, because scar tissue may form on the damaged muscle tissue, which
- could produce a chronic problem that would last longer than one to two months.
-
- I would appreciate any advice from anyone who is familiar with this kind of
- persistent muscle soreness or knows of any references, people or books,
- that could provide me with more information.
-
- Thanks in advance for any help.
