- Come on guys! Someone out there must be running the Shuttle ZX with Enya
- engines.
-
- Repeating my problem - After about two hours on my ZX I noticed a significant
- wobble in the clutch bell. Traced it to the fan/hub assembly not running
- true. I pulled the engine assembly to see what I could do. Looks like there
- is no real easy way to dial this assembly in. At first (previous posting) I
- thought the problem was due to the metal hub assembly shifting within the
- plastic fan thinking the lower fan plastic surface was what was seating
- against the engine bearing. Upon closer inspection I realized the metal hub
- at the lower fan surface is what rests on the inner race of the bearing. This
- surface is slotted for the key that mates with the engine crank. Pushing the
- fan/hub assembly onto the crank reveals the fact that it can be rocked
- slightly due the slop in the hole drilled though the hub. There appears to
- be more slop at the top than at the bearing race. Since the mating area of
- the hub at the engine bearing race is so small the assembly will always shift
- from vertical when tightening the crank bolt. The result is a run out of
- over .015 when dialing at the top center of the fan hub. This is way beyond
- acceptable and will cause serious shaking/wear of the machine.
-
- I tried removing the key and rotating the hub to various places, but no matter
- what position, once the crank bolt is tigthened the run up goes up beyond
- acceptable limits.
-
- Called Altech and they said to not tighten the bolt much since the key
- prevents the fan/hub from spinning and to use locktite. Tried this, but in
- order to keep it running true the bolt was basically finger tight. One tap
- or a pull with a force roughly equivalent to the side pull of the starter
- belt immediately forced the fan/hub out of true. It is hard to believe the
- ZX has been on the market so long with this problem. Am I missing something?
-
- Called heli-unlimited and he confirmed the problem. He deals with it by
- drilling out the hub a few thousanths and gradually tigtening/tapping and
- dial indicating to get the hub to run true. He sometimes retains the key,
- but in most cases has to remove it to get it to run true. He also pointed
- out that the zx engine mount holes are slighly off also which also compounds
- the clutch/fan/hub alignment problem. He solves this by drilling out the
- engine holes a bit and truing the engine to mount angle.
-
- Any enhamcement to this proecedure or tips would be appreciated.

- Thanks,
