  12. I am having a problem with my '88 Toyota Corolla (2-barrel carb, 4-cylinder,
  13. California emission controls).

  15. Here are the symptoms:
  16.     The engine runs fine at fast idle. When it warms up and the choke
  17.     valve opens, the engine drops into a VERY rough idle. If I take off
  18.     the air cleaner while this is happening, I can hear a loud misfiring
  19.     sound out of the carb throat. Running up the RPM makes the problem go
  20.     away.
  21.     When I'm driving, the engine has virtually no power at low RPM. If
  22.     I'm driving at 50-60 mph in 4th or 5th gear the engine shakes and
  23.     surges badly unless I downshift to get the RPMs up.

  25. What I've tried:
  26.     The spark plugs and ignition wires are fine. The fuel pump seems to be
  27.     okay. I've applied vacuum directly to the EGR valve and the engine
  28.     didn't die but it sure complained. I can hear a sound like a vacuum leak
  29.     coming from the vicinity of the carb but I can't localize it. I've
  30.     shot carb cleaner down the carb throat. I can't get to the fuel cut
  31.     solenoid without taking off the carb and I don't really want to do that
  32.     unless I have no other choice.

  34. Any suggestions? I've never worked on a car that had so many emission controls
  35. and I sure hate doing it. Please e-mail any responses. Thanks for your help.
