- The TV show NEXT STEP on the DISCOVERY channel went
- to Covina, California for a demo on how LIDAR works.
-
- The cops there said they preferred the laser to radar
- mostly for cancer reasons - they cited several cases
- of eye and thigh cancer in traffic cops using radar.
-
- They were using the Pro Laser Gun that has the little
- Heads Up Display on top that puts a little red target
- bullseye on the target vehicle. It took a couple of
- seconds to "lock up" and gave both a speed and distance
- reading. They "shoot" a short distances (the longest
- one was just 128 yards) in ambush mode hiding behind
- bushes and parked cars.
-
- The only disadvantage shown was the 2-3 second lock-up
- time and the difficulty keeping the sighting bullseye
- on the vechile. Even at distances just over 300 feet,
- the dot was dancing all over the car. That seems to
- back up the C&D Lidar test a while back that said it
- was difficult to keep the target in the sight long
- enough to get a "lock-up" at distances much over 500
- feet.
-
- The hunters out there know how difficult it is to
- keep the scope sight steady in off-hand - now try it
- without having the rifle to your shoulder. Of course
- you could brace it up against something.
