- Well, I actually drive a manual (most people in Australia do), but there
- have been some reasonably successful automatics in racing cars - probably
- the most noted would be the McLaren-Honda of this year - which has what
- they call a semi-automatic, but which, if they leave the gearstick alone
- will change up for them at the most appropriate time. Going a little
- further back, we had the Chapparals of the 60s with slushboxes.
-
- But, I agree to the basic thrust here - there is nothing intrinsically
- difficult about driving a manual, it really does become second nature
- and also gives you an extra measure of control. By and large however,
- its efficiency advantage is being eroded by electronically controlled
- transmissions and lockup converters. In addition, most racing drivers
- for quite a long time have maintained that if you're driving in the city
- then an automatic is the way to go.
-
- Still, I passed my test on a manual, and it was more difficult when
- I was that inexperienced.
