- I've been to Europe three times and have never had a problem getting a
- reasonably-priced automatic. While the smallest econoboxes (ie, Metros,
- Fiestas, Polos) are hard to come by in automatics, the next step up
- (Escorts, Grenadas) is no problem at all. I've never had to pay more than 150
- pounds per week, unlimited mileage.
-
- (Note that when going to Britain, even people comfortable with a stick
- in North America like renting automatics. Not everyone can easily make
- the transition to shifting with their left hand.)

- That doesn't apply just to rentals. Automatics are always an
- extra-expense option, except on the larger "luxury" boats.
- There's no question that an automatic is more expensive, more
- complex mechanically, and often impractical on the very smallest
- cars. That's a tradeoff some of us can live with. It's a tradeoff every
- Macintosh owner has made. (oops, sorry, wrong flame-war :-)
-
- I also am forced to fly airlines, pay their fares and change my
- schedules to suit theirs, because I don't have a pilot's license.
- Another tradeoff. People make many such tradeoffs each day.
