  19. the porsche system is clearly more complex and sophisticated.. computers
  20. controlling multi-plate clutch packs for the differentials.  the one found
  21. on the carrera 4 is much toned down from the ultimate one found in the 959
  22. which boasts variable torque split.  (all other systems have a fixed torque
  23. split until one or more wheels lose grip, whereby some form of limited slip
  24. device re-distributes the torque)

  26. the system found on the 5 speed audi quattros (i'll get to the slush
  27. ones in a sec) are simple *and* effective.  the torsen differential is
  28. fully mechanical but is truly a wonderful device.  most formula 1 and
  29. indy cars use it; so does the much hyped desert storm vehicle, the
  30. humvee.

  32. the slush quattros (V8, 100) use computer controlled multiplate clutches
  33. for the center differential.  in this respect they are the same concept
  34. as the carrera 4.  the subaru legacy (slush) and svx also use this.

  36. to answer your question, theoretically speaking, porsche has the most
  37. advanced system in the 959.. light years ahead of anything that
  38. anybody else would even consider building.  the 964 (carrera 4) is
  39. more modest and in my judgement slightly more sophisticated than
  40. audi's best.

  42. however, as mercedes has shown, complexity and sophistication doesn't
  43. necessarily convert into on-road superiority.  audi's simple torsen
  44. based system, together with 12 years experience in tuning AWD
  45. suspension is extremely effective and not many people will argue with
  46. that.  (the latest disasters are a different story though.. i'm
  47. referring to the 90Q).

  49. one magazine tested the 20 valve turbo quattro koop against the
  50. carrera 4.  the carrera 4 won the comparison, but it is hard to make
  51. firm conclusions about who has the better system, since the cars are
  52. so different in layout.

  54. ok, ok you've got the gun pointed on my head now... i'll give the
  55. prize to porsche, but i'll give audi a close second.  i'd say that if
  56. you were torn between buying an AWD audi and porsche, don't let the
  57. AWD system be the deciding factor....
