-
- Without commentary (I drive both a Saturn SL2 and a Honda Civic (college
- days)) here's a little piece to help people determine domestic content.
-
- The US dept of <whatever> accepts as 100% domestic content anything that
- has "added major value" to a component. So, the various component makers
- can pretty much ship $9 dollars of parts from oversees, put them into
- a $1 US made box, assemble it in a cornfield-turned-factory, and call it
- $10 worth of US parts. Here's an example from Business Week, 18 Nov 1991
- issue, that gives an example;
-
- "Honda says the crankshaft in the 90 Accord is 100% US because it's made
- entirely in the US. But many of its American suppliers are owned by
- Japanese companies. Thus, it's hard to determine the true 'domestic
- content'" :
-
- |> Using American steel, a bar is made by Copperweld steel co, 63.4%
- owned by Japanese.
-
- |> Next, TFO Tech, a 100% Japanese owned firm, forges the steel,
- adding major value
-
- |> The crankshaft is shipped to Metalurgical Services Co for heat
- treatment. (100% US owned).
-
- |> The part returns to TFO for more processing
-
- |> Finally the engine plant in Anna, Oh, 100% owned by Honda, machines
- and assembles it.
-
- Go figger.
-
- The article has a few more interesting examples. What I find interesting
- is why would the crankshaft have a grand tour of Ohio, going thru
- 4-5 suppliers...
-
- >Of course, I could have bought some Chrysler product manufactured
- >exclusively in Canada if I really wanted an import.
-
- Watch it, buddy. Don Clayton is listening :-) (sorry Don, could not resist)
-
- Spiros (speaking for hisself of course)
