  20. Fram oil filters
  21. ----------------

  23.    For the last several years, we have recommended Fram Wear Guard oil
  24. filters because of the protection they afford automobile engines. Now,
  25. Fram has come out with an improved oil filter, which goes by the name
  26. Extra Guard.
  27.  
  28.    Fram filters have always had good single-pass efficiency ratings.
  29. The higher the single-pass efficiency, the more particle will be removed
  30. from the oil each time the oil passes through the filter. Screen type
  31. surface filters have poor single-pass efficiency, while depth filters
  32. (such as "toilet ((no, not toyota, ed.)) paper" filters) generally have
  33. high singel-pass efficiency. During Fram's on-going testing program, they
  34. determined that single-pass efficiency is one of the best ways of
  35. determining filter effectivness. Thus, the goal was to better their already
  36. good single-pass efficiency.

  38.    The trade-off is that as single-pass efficiency rises, restriction often
  39. rises, too. Thus, a screen-type filter (when clean) offers little restriction,
  40. while a "toilet paper" filter is very restrictive.

  42.    To increase single-pass efficiency while controlling restrictiveness,
  43. Fram switched from their highly evolved resin-coated cellulose fiber
  44. element to a hybrid element made of glass fibers and resin-coated
  45. cellulose fibers. The coated cellulose fibers give the element the strength
  46. it needs (very omportant in Volkswagen applications, as we have learned),
  47. while the glass fibers act as barbs to catch particles. New construction
  48. techniques give the Fram Extra Guard filter the characteristics of both a
  49. surface filter and a depth filter.

  51.    The result is an increase in single-pass efficiency from 92.4% in the
  52. Wear Guard series to 96.3% in the Extra Guard Series, with no increase in
  53. restrictiveness (both filters are rated only 3 psi pressure drop).

  55.    Project 924 may have been abused in the past, but from now on it gest
  56. nothing but the best.
