- I know several people who have killed their batteries at night during
- a snowstorm by using the heater fan, rear defogger, brake lights, and
- headlamps continuously. It is quite common around here for highway
- traffic to come to a complete stop when it snows during rush hour.
- Unless you are aware of this problem and selectively turn on and off
- different loads, it is easy to kill your battery in less than 1 hr
- because the generator cannot put out enough power when to keep up with
- the load when the engine is idling. Personally, I shut the headlamps
- off (leaving the parking lights on) if traffic doesn't move for more
- than 1 minute or so. Since I am only a foot or two from the car in
- front of me, (and since nobody is moving, anyway), I don't think this
- presents a safety problem. When I see that traffic ahead starts to
- move again, I turn them on again.
