- IMHO, get an outboard battery-powered mic preamp with variable gain.
- The reason most cheap tape recorder mic inputs are so poor is that
- their fixed gain front end stage is useless. If your music is real
- loud, you distort the preamp, and if the music is too quiet, you
- have to turn the levels way up and get lots of hiss. It is very
- helpful to be able to adjust the front end gain of the preamp so
- you can match the dynamic range of the music to the dynamic range
- of the recorder.
-
- I can't recommend a unit, unfortunately, which has low noise, since
- I built my own transformer-coupled preamp from some parts from an
- old Scully reel-to-reel recorder. However, it is based on a schemo
- in "Audio IC Op Amp Applications" published by Howard Sams.
-
- The reason I recommend battery power is that it makes it easier
- to get rid of hum and ground loops if you have one less AC cord.
-
- With this setup, I get _excellent_ sound quality with a plain old
- cassette deck. Indeed, I'd bet that the sound is as good as it
- is in the kind of rooms I record in. IMHO, the #1 thing which
- determines the sound quality of a recording is the room, and in
- particular whether there are ventilation blowers going, fluorescent
- lights buzzing, etc. #2 is the quality of the mics and mic preamp,
- #3 is how you place the mics and the musicians, and #9999 is the
- quality of the tape recorder!
