- GOVERNMENT INDEBTEDNESS THREATNESS AMERICA
- "In the recent election, the most compelling issue confronting the
- nation was merely glossed over by the Democratic and Republican presidential
- nominees. And though it was given a good deal of attention by Ross Perot, he
- managed to recommend the wrong solution to the problem. All of which means
- that this problem will just get worse."
- So states John F McManus, the national president of the John Birch
- Society. What problem is he referring to? "It's the red-ink, massive national
- debt that has quadrupled since 1981 when the Reagan Bush adminstration began.
- From $930 billion in 1981, the national debt has soared past the $4 Trillion
- level this year," he added. "Interest on this debt now consumes $330 billion
- per year - far beyond our spending for national defense!"
- The Society President noted that, since there are about 250 million
- Americans, "Simple arithmetic shows that the bill for interest alone this
- year - a burden we all pay through various forms of taxation - comes to
- $1,300 for every man, woman, and child in this nation. We are mortgaging our
- future and that of our children and grandchildren."
- Mr. McManus notes that George Bush and Bill Clinton talked a lot about
- the spiraling deficit. "But it was all talk," he claims. "because each
- advocated programs that will only make the problem more severe. And Ross
- Perot said he would raise taxes to reduce the deficit when theonly sane
- solution - reducing the size and cost of government - was ignored."
- The Birch Society maintains that the key to America's economic survival
- rests with the House of Representatives. The U.S. Constitution mandates, "All
- bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House..." According to the
- Society, if the House refuses to initiate legislation to fund unconstitional,
- costly, or dangerous programs, "these programs will die and there's nothing
- the President or the Senate can do about it."
- Mr. McManus insists that "allowing our government to spend wildly, to run
- up irresponsible deficits, and to tax us unmercifully constitutes the path
- too tyranny. We owe it to ourselves to put a stop to this treachery, and the
- place to start is with the U.S. House of Representatives."
- In 1993, the Birch Society plans to place an increased emphasis on its
- TRIM (Tax Reform IMmediately) Program which distributes the voting record of
- all U.S. representatives on major spending legislation.
