- Yeah, my understanding of theme is that the word refers to the thesis of the
- writing--the pattern or philosophy which the story implies. I think that any
- meaningful story will have a thesis, regardless of whether the author is
- aware of it. Go look up some analyses of Shakespeare--critics are always
- finding deep meaning in his stories, yet I don't believe he ever consciously
- set out to build a play around a theme.

- I think a writer defines his theme unconsciously when he makes choices about
- what to write and what will happen in what he writes. A meaningful story
- tends to define a theme, whether that's wha t the author set out to do or
- not.
