  19. I sent this message before, and I got no replies.  I don't know
  20. whether this is because no one is interested in the subject, or
  21. whether my message just got lost.  So I am sending it again.

  23. What does everyone think about deaf protests against the use of
  24. hearing actors in deaf roles?  The Asians also do this.  They
  25. recently mounted a big campaign against a play that planned to cast
  26. a white person in an Asian role.  I think that this is incredibly
  27. stupid.  Don't these people understand what an actor is?  The whole
  28. job of an actor is to play people who are different from what the
  29. actor really is.  If you carry this out all the way, you could only
  30. have a married actor playing the role of a married man, and you
  31. could only have a divorced actor playing the role of a divorced
  32. man.

  34. And, if there is a role for a character with a 12 year old son and
  35. a 9 year old daughter, you could only cast an actor with a 12 year
  36. old son and a nine year old daughter in the role.  I don't think
  37. that these Deaf and Asians actors are really idealists fighting for
  38. a cause.  They just want jobs.
