- There is no real protection. Hopefully most individuals have enough
- integrity not to cheat their customers. I've known local people who
- sold defective merchandise or broke people's computers during memory
- upgrades, so even restricting yourself to local sales isn't a guarantee.
-
- COD is no protection for the buyer at all. You are not allowed to inspect
- the merchandise until you've paid for it.
-
- UPS will not insure used equipment for operation (and they will give you
- a very hard time covering loss). They generally won't even consider your
- claim unless you point out obvious shipping damage when the package is
- delivered (they aren't responsible for damage due to inadequate packaging
- which might not be obvious from the outside). I noticed an individual
- selling a large ESDI disk drive, which he "guaranteed" - he said that
- if it didn't work on arrival, make your claim with UPS. That sounds like
- an invitation to buy an expensive piece of scrap metal to me.
-
- I can't warrant used merchandise that I sell, and I can't guarantee that it
- will work in YOUR system, and I can't guarantee that you will install or
- use it correctly. But I'm always willing to consider a refund within a
- reasonable period of time (like a week maximum, shipping both ways at
- your expense) if you have unanticipated problems. Needless to say, I
- don't misrepresent the condition of my merchandise.
-
- For what it's worth, all of my net deals, buying and selling, have been
- satisfactory to both parties thus far. I've had two people reneg on deals
- that had already been finalized, both local!
