- First, I do not know anything about Gregg's DAT drive in specific
- but would like to share some comments that others may find useful
- before buying ANY USED WangDAT drive.
-
- A recent issue of MacWeek had NEW DAT drives advertised (for the Mac, but
- they are
- SCSI devices so they should work on UNIX workstations) for only
- $1100.00. That was brand new equipemt. So, $850 may be a little high
- for a used WangDAT.
-
- Also, try to get the serial number of the DAT drive mechanism itself
- and call the WANGDAT factory to get its age. I bought a used WangDAT
- last spring that turned out to be one of the original DAT drives
- made. It failed after a couple of months of VERY light use (backing up
- a home Macintosh system). It cost me $550 to get ot replaced at the
- factory with a new DAT drive mechanism. So, I ended up paying more for
- the used DAT drive then a brand new DAT drive would have cost.
-
- So, please remember that DAT drives have a finite lifetime and that
- you really don't know either how old the drive is, or how it has been
- used.
-
- As I said, this may not apply to Gregg's drive. But I hope that others
- have a better experience then I did.
