- There's really something to this, other than just simple courtesy.
-
- I find it very difficult to make offers to people when I'm not sure if
- they will respond or not... I, and many others, I'm sure, take honor
- seriously... If I make an offer to someone, and say "I will give you
- $x for your y," and they accept, honor binds me to that. In effect,
- that ties up that money until the seller either accepts or denies the
- offer.
-
- It's not too tough to just reply with the text, "sold."
-
- Another thing to keep in mind is that USENET isn't instantaneous. I
- used to be on a very slow feed, and would be about 5 days behind on
- most posts, and in cases over a week. Combine this with the fact that
- some mail sites batch mail, and lots of people either don't check mail
- every day, or can't read news every day, and you can expect to receive
- mail up to two weeks or more after your post, even from people who
- responded at their first opportunity. And this isn't just a
- "worst-case" scenario, it's pretty common.
-
- Please, people, have the courtesy to respond to people when they
- respond to your postings. At the VERY least, if there are just too
- many to respond to, post an article with a subject that will indicate
- clearly to those who responded that this means them.
-
- If someone phones you regarding a classified ad, you wouldn't tell
- them you will return their call, and never do it. Please have the
- same courtesy on USENET.
