- Here in Louisiana, the situation is quite different. Almost all the
- EMS service in this area is provided by paid, private services with
- fire department rolling as first responders. There are also some areas
- served by paid municipal third services and paid POLICE department
- run EMS divisions. Volunteer fire departments are not uncommon
- in the more rural areas, but I don't know of any volunteer EMS services
- around here. This has led to some very large private companies
- providing service. Acadian Ambulance Service covers more than 1/3 of
- the state as a 911 provider, and Medic One runs transports and handles
- roll-overs in 4 parishes(counties) in and around New Orleans.
