- Michael Seneco Overheard William J. Vital talking about Afa training..

- WJV> Red Cross Prehospital
- WJV> medicine has evolved dramatically over the past 20 years. AFA was,

- WJV> it's time, the standard of care. This was at a time when
- ambulance
- WJV> crews basically ran "scope and swoop" operations. Although If you
- do

- Ask
- WJV> yourself this: If you were lying in the street critically injured,
- who
- WJV> would you want taking care of you, someone with 40 hours of

- WJV> (AFA), or someone with triple that training (EMT).

-
- Bill,
-
- To anwser your question quoted above : I would want
- anyone
- who could help me to provide me with aid. I certainly
- would
- not ask them what there training was before I allowed
- them
- to assist me. Last I checked, there is no difference in
- the
- way a Red Cross trained and an EMT trained person stops
-
- someone from bleeding.
-
- You are right, the Red Cross was the only trainer of
- ambulance
- persons beofre the DOT created the EMT training, but did
- you
- realize the Red Cross had significant representation on
- the
- DOT committee that created the EMT modules ? And that
- the Red
- Cross derived it's knowledge and information from being
- the
- primary battle field medical provider in the Civil and
- First
- world war ?
-
- The Red Cross made the concious decision to take a
- different
- route when the DOT course was designed. They identified
- a
- need for First Aid training, quality First Aid
- training,
- to lay persons in the community and the work place to
- further the chances of those struck with a medical
- emergency.
- It follows along hand in hand with EMS training, then
- and
- now. It helps ipitimize the saying `When Minutes
- Count'.
-
- The Red Cross is furthering its efforts on this behalf
- by
- revising the AFA course to reflect recent changes in
- Medical Teachings. They are keeping up.
-
- So yes, I would trust a Red Cross AFA person with my
- life
- secure in the fact that they are a part of the system,
- not
- interferring with it.
