- HOME ON THE RANGE is a compelling story of the unseen human
- costs of the arms race and the "Star Wars" missile program. The
- many islands of the Kwajelein Atoll were once home oF several
- thousand Pacific Islanders. But for the last three decades, the
- U.S. has used the atoll as a top secret test range for "Star
- Wars" and ballistic missiles. Ten thousand islanders were relo-
- cated from their home islands to a single small island, barely
- one-tenth of a square mile. Their traditional way of life vir-
- tually destroyed, the islanders survive on beer and Spam import-
- ed from the U.S. and face an alarmingly high incidence of alco-
- holism and suicide. HOME ON THE RANGE chronicles the human and
- ecological tragedy of the native islanders and their effort to
- regain their lush paradise.

- While government officials debate arms control, more nuclear
- weapons are manufactured every day at facilities across America,
- creating invisible hazards for thousands of citizens. Aging
- weapons reactors are dangerously worn-out, radioactive contami-
- nation is widespread, and taxpayers face an enormous cleanup
- bill: up to $200 billion. BUILDING BOMBS examines the disaster-
- ous domestic consequences of the arms race by focusing on the
- Savannah River Plant (SRP), where weapons-grade plutonium and
- tritium are manufactured. The plant, located in Aiken, South
- Carolina, was partially shut down in 1988 due to safety concerns.
-
- BUILDING BOMBS is a rich, personal look at the social and
- environmental impact of the plant, and the choices it has forced
- some workers and local residents to make. The film begins with
- historical footage documenting the conversion of 300 square miles
- of rural farmland and small towns into a massive five-reactor
- facility. Personal stories are mixed with filmed evidence of
- decades of environmental disregard, along with counterpoints from
- Energy Department and plant officials. BUILDING BOMBS is a
- thoughtful film on an important topic that has proven to be an
- effective catalyst with a wide-range of audiences.

-
- DARK CIRCLE reveals the full scope of the Atomic Age, from the
- dropping of the first atomic bombs to the present day perils of
- the hydrogen bombs assembly line and nuclear power. This classic
- film interweaves dramatic personal stories of American nuclear
- victims with rare footage of the secret world where the hydrogen
- bomb is manufactured, tested and sold. Many of the issues raised
- have become today's headlines.
-
- DARK CIRCLE is a major accomplishment which serves as a re-
- minder of the great dangers posed by nuclear technology--whether

- and corporate bureaucrats have for those they are supposed to
- serve and protect.

- Could a nuclear war begin by accident, even with warmer re-
- lations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union? LOSING CONTROL?
- is the first film to explain in detail how "the final blunder"
- could occur. The heart of the film is a frightening, plausible
- scenario that starts in the Middle East and escalates to an un-
- intended confrontation between the two superpowers. LOSING
- CONTROL? reveals how nuclear alerts have increased since 1984
- and documents the growing reliance on "launch on warning." A
- number of possible solutions to this threat are proposed.
- Among the experts featured are: former Defense Secretary Robert
- McNamara, Senator Sam Nunn, and former Assistant Secretary of
- Defense Richard Perle.

- TO WHAT END? explores the four major long-term policy options
- our nation could pursue in an ettempt to reduce the risk of nuc-
- lear war:(1) military superiority over the Soviets (peace through
- strength); (2) lower levels of nuclear weapons (arms control);
- (3) ballistic missile defense ("star wars"); (4) the abolition of
- all nuclear weapons (disarmament). These four options are pre-
- sented clearly and concisely through interviews with 16 leading
- experts, policy makers, government officials and scientists.
- Top arms control advisors to Mikhail Gorbachev present the Soviet
- government perspective. Among those featured are: Richard Pipes,
- Harvard University; Robert McNamara, former Secretary of Defense;
- Lt. General Daniel Graham, director of High Frontier; and Randall
- Forsberg, director of the Institute for Defense and Disarmament
- Studies. TO WHAT END? provides a valuable overview of nuclear
- policy choices that can help the public to decide the best dir-
- ection for our nation.
- *Narrated by Marvin Kalb
