- Nestle and American Home Products (AHP) are directly responsible for the deaths
- of 975,000 babies and indirectly for nearly half a million more each year
- primarily in third world countries.
- They die because they are fed a product that is not safe to use in conditions of
- poverty. This product is baby formula that has been pushed on them by a
- market-ing ploy. Nestles and AHP give out free samples of formula to women at
- health
- care facilities (they even dress their salespeople in nurses' uniforms). Once
- their breast milk dries up the women are dependent on formula which costs an
- average of $550 per infant per year. The women often dilute the formula to
- make it last longer. And because they don't get their mothers' antibodies they
- from their mother's breastmilk they die of disease and of malnutrition. Many
- more die from the use of unsterilized bottles and/or unsafe water when using
- the formula.
- Nestles had promised to stop but broke their vow and, since 1988, have resumed.
-
- The Action for Corporate Accountability (ACA) has called for a nationwide boy-
- cott of both companies. They have urged an active boycott with participants
- which means to tell the stores in which they shop that these companies kill
- babies. ACA says the word will get back to the companies.
- Nestle's brand names include Carnation, Contadina, Libby, Nestea, and
- Stouffer'sAHP makes Anacin, Jiffy Pop, and Today contraceptives.
