- BRAZIL: HOSTAGES OF THE INDIGENOUS
-
- from El Diario La Prensa
-
- edlp nov 7 Brazil
-
- Ninety-six people continue to be held by Guajajara indians
- of Brazil since November 2, when the indigenous people blocked
- the highway which cuts through their reservation, located some
- 400 kilometers south of Sao Luiz, the capital of the state of
- Marahnao, in northeastern Brazil. The 95 men and one woman were
- taken hsotage after the killing of a 21-year-old warrior, Augusto
- Pereira, the son of the chief of the Canabrava village, by gunmen
- who live in Sao Pedro dos Cacetes, located inside an area which
- was reserved in 1989 for the indigenous people.
-
- In return for releasing the hostages the Guajajaras are
- demanding that the people of Sao Pedro dos Cacetes be removed
- from that village, something they have been asking for for fifty
- years. They are asking that the minister of justice, Mauricio
- Correa and the governor of Maranhao, Edson Lobao, meet with them
- to resolve the situation. Correa said that if the situation is
- aggravated he will displace the indian reserve. He has set up a
- rigorous investigation of the murder of Pereira and has
- constituted a commission, presided over by the president of the
- National Indian Foundation (Funai), a state agency, to process
- the removal of the 2,400 inhabitatnts of Sao Pedro dos Cacets.
