- PANAMA'S ATTORNEY GENERAL BOMB VICTIM
-
- Panama's Attorney General Rogelio Cruz was received minor
- wounds on Friday, November 6 as the result of an explosion of a
- bomb located in the parking lot of his office building. Another
- twelve people were also wounded. The bomb exploded about five
- minutes after Cruz left his car, heading toward his office on the
- building's second floor. He received emergency first aid and
- returned to his home. In a television interview Cruz said
- "They're trying to revent an investigation we're carrying out,"
- in reference to the freezing of banks accounts suspected of being
- part of a drug-money laundering operation.
-
- Since the US invasion of Panama in December of 1989 at least
- twelve bombs have been exploded in public buildings, private
- business enterprises and the homes of public officials. The
- groupd M-20, which became known after the invasion, has taken
- responsibility for the bombings via telephone calls to various
- television stations. Two policemen who guard the attorney
- general's office and one civilian have been arrested.
-
- Two weeks ago Cruz was accused of being involved illicit
- activities after having unfrozen accounts which were allegedly
- involved in money laundering. Demonstrations in front of the
- attorney general's office demanding his dismissal have included
- Panama's first lady, Ana Mae de Endara.
-
- Cruz said this explosion was the first time a bomb was
- intended to cause personal damage. President Endara asked to
- Panamanian people to confront "with courage and decision the
- cowards who utilize terror to intimidate the people." The bomb
- destroyed the parking lot's roof and some windows, including
- those of the attorney general's office. The attorney general's
- car was also partially destroyed. (AP 11/7)
