- LOVE, WOMEN, FLOWERS -- AND PESTICIDES
-
- To produce cosmetically perfect blooms for export, Colombia's flower
- industry uses heavy doses of toxic pesticides. Amor, Mujeres y Flores
- (Love, Women and Flowers), an award-winning documentary from
- Colombia, provides an eloquent, disturbing account of pesticide use
- and working conditions in the nation's third-largest export industry.
-
- Colombia's 80,000 flower industry workers, mostly women, perform
- long hours of physically grueling and hazardous labor. They are
- routinely exposed to highly toxic pesticides, including captan,
- parathion, endosulfan, and methyl bromide. As one worker in the
- film says, "Flowers are very beautiful, but they're a health hazard.
- Behind every flower there is death." While many workers realize their
- work is harming them, they have few other employment options.
-
- PAN NA RC organized two showings of Amor, Mujeres y Flores in
- the San Francisco Bay Area in October, followed by discussions with
- a panel of Latin American activists. Panelists agreed that pressure
- from U.S. consumers could convince Colombian flower producers to
- change their practices. These showings attracted the attention of a
- national cable news network, which produced a segment featuring
- interviews with Amparo Cardenas, a Colombian activist, and Monica
- Moore, PAN NA RC's Executive Director.
-
- Along with PAN Latin America's Regional Coordinator (who served
- as a technical advisor to the filmmakers), PAN NA RC will continue
- to draw attention to conditions in the flower industry and press for
- changes.
- + What you can do: Organize a showing of Amor, Mujeres y Flores
- (distributed by Women Make Movies, 225 Lafayette St., New York,
- NY 10012; (212) 925-0606.)
-
- Write to Colombian flower growers and tell them you're concerned
- about working conditions in the industry and will not buy Colombian
- flowers until they improve. Encourage florists to write letters and
- educate their suppliers.
-
- Send letters to: German Torres, AGRODEX, Calle 90 #11A-40, Bogota
- D.E., Colombia. Ana Mercedes Londo$o, ASOCOLFLORES, Carrera
- 9A #90-57; Bogota D.E., Colombia.
-
- Send a copy of your letter to Amparo Cardenas (address below). She
- can also deliver solidarity letters to flower workers.

- NEW VIDEO ON "EXTINCTIONS"
-
- Scientists from the GSC's Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum
- Geology (ISPG) in Calgary, in cooperation with Rogers Cable TV,
- Calgary, have produced a video entitled "Life in the Balance: the
- Study of Extinction" (29 min). It highlights the research of two
- ISPG geologists concerned with mass extinctions in the geological
- record, and draws parallels between ancient extinctions and
- modern environmental crises. It originated because of concern
- about global change and the importance of bringing local
- scientific work to the public. It was completed over two years
- with a budget of only $1500, and is suitable for Junior High
- through undergraduate education levels.
-
- Rogers will provide a copy, at cost, for non-profit educational
- purposes to anyone interested. In particular, it is hoped that
- "The Study of Extinction" can be aired as a public service by
- Cable TV stations across Canada. Earth scientists and other
- researchers concerned with the global environment are encouraged
- to consider this approach in furthering the message of
- environmental protection and promoting the public awareness of
- science.

- from Our Future", a new 17-minute video on world environmental
- problems and potentials for their solutions, will take place at 6 p.m.
- on Thursday, 22 June, in the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium. A reception
- will follow the screening.
-
- The video is sponsored by the United Nations Development
- Programme (UNDP) to call attention to the world's growing
- environmental crisis and to suggest actions which can be taken by
- Governments, international agencies, community groups and individuals
- to protect resources and achieve sustainable development. Its
- premiere coincides with the presentation of "Environment: trends and
- perspectives", a report on UNDP's environmental activities (document
- DP/89/63), to the organization's 48-nation Governing Council, meeting
- in New York this month.
-
- Among those attending the reception will be UNDP Administrator
- William H. Draper III, the Deputy Assistant Administrator and
- Director of the Bureau of Programme Policy and Evaluation, Michael
- Gucovsky; the UNDP Principal Technical Adviser, Charles Lankester.
-
- "Borrowed from Our Future" was inspired by Our common future, a
- report prepared by the World Commission on Environment and
- Development, headed by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.
- Like the report, the video examines the links between poverty and
- environmental degradation in several fields, providing an overview of
- the key environmental issues critical to sustainable development.

-
- ARE NATIONAL FORESTS IMPERILED BY
- US FORESTS SERVICE (MIS)-MANAGEMENT?
-
- Massive clearcutting destroys native National Forests, ancient
- forests and unique forest ecosystems. 20 years after a clearcut, only
- stumps remain. The agency assigned to protect our forests may be
- their worst enemy.
-
- Pulitzer Prize winning author N. Scott Momaday hosts OUR VANISHING
- FORESTS, a one hour documentary which examines Forest Service
- practices. Momaday's Kiowa Indian heritage teaches respect for the
- and appreciation for the land. In his book, An American Land Ethic,
- Momaday continues in the tradition of Americans like John Muir,
- and Gifford Pinochet. Momaday warns,"We Americans must come again to
- a moral comprehension of the Earth and air. We must live according
- to the principle of a land ethic. The alternative is not to live
- at all."
-
- "The public believes the Forest Service and Smokey the Bear protect our
- national heritage," says Program Director Arlen Slobodow. "In fact
- we taxpayers subsidize the damage and destruction of our forests even
- as the government looses money on the timber sales."
-
- Using rare historical footage, OUR VANISHING FORESTS examines
- 100 years of Forest Service practice to see where the Forest Service
- went astray from the conservationist principles of its founder, Gifford
- Pinochet.
-
- OUR VANSIHING FORESTS is available from Public INterest Video
- Network (PIVN), which produces public affairs programs for PBS
- and cable networks.
-
- OUR VANISHING FORESTS is available from PIVN for $29.95 for citzens and
- grassroots activists. To order call or write: Public Interest

- Note 56 WAKE UP CALIFORNIA, a video on rad
- hsd@igc.org 11:20 pm Jan 27, 1992
-
-
- RWake Up California:
- The Hazards of Radioactive Waste Dumping R
- To be released February, 1992
-
- THE ISSUE: Currently there is strong political pressure to license
- a radioactive waste dump in California. We are at a very critical
- point, and the decisions made now will influence 100,000 genera-
- tions to come. If the proposed dump is implemented, hundreds of
- tons of radioactive waste from all over the country will be trans-
- ported to California and buried in unlined trenches in the desert.
- Some of this waste will be lethal for more than a million years.
- The only hope to avoid this ecological disaster is an informed
- citizenry that demands and insures the safest possible handling
- and isolation of this waste from the environment. Out of sight,
- out of mind shallow land burial is irresponsible and extremely
- dangerous.
-
- A small amount of financial support is now urgently needed for the
- final completion and distribution of a short, informative video-
- tape on the hazards of irresponsible radioactive waste dumping.
- There is a critical need for a video documentary on this subject
- that gives the public the true facts and insights into the serious
- threat that radiation poses to the continuation of all life on our
- planet. Now this need is being met by RWAKE UP CALIFORNIA,Swhich
- is very near completion. Through this program viewers will learn
- about the major issues associated with radioactive waste dumping,
- including the fact that so-called "low-level" radioactive waste is
- a misnomer, and does not mean low risk. The public will be made
- aware that there are safer and saner approaches to radioactive
- waste management than the dump plan which is about to be licensed.
-
- This videotape will be used by television, schools, conferences,
- churches, peace and environmental groups, and other service orga-
- nizations. Even before seeing it, KQED, San FranciscoUs PBS sta-
- tion, has expressed interest in airing it. WAKE UP CALIFORNIA will
- help to alert, empower and activate the critical number of people
- necessary to demand proper protection of present and future gener-
- ations from accidental poisoning by radioactive waste.
-
- SUMMARY OF THE VIDEOTAPE: The context of the video is the pre-
- ciousness of our interconnected and interdependent world.
- Spokespersons include Joanna Macy, PhD, author and systems theo-
- rist, who provides insight into the fragility of our genetic code,
- which can so easily be damaged. John Gofman, MD and foremost nu-
- clear chemist, whose pioneering research led to the discovery of
- plutonium in the 1940s, speaks on cancer and mutagenic damage. Dr.
- Jan Kirsch, oncologist, explains the deception and dangers of mix-
- ing short lived medical wastes with long lived wastes from the nu-
- clear industry, as the current plan will do. Diane DUArrigo, ex-
- pert on dump issues, reveals the manipulation and deception inher-
- ent in the mislabeling of Rlow levelS waste. Dr. Marvin Resnikoff,
- expert on radioactive waste management, provides information on
- safer approaches, including CanadaUs model facility that puts
- waste in above ground, monitored storage. Gray Davis, California
- State Controller, discusses the financial implications of leaking
- dumps and the enormous burden they put on taxpayers. News footage
- shot by WIXT-TV describes the disasterous situation in Sheffield,
- Illinois, where a dump leaked radiation. Viewers are urged to take
- action now to prevent a similar disaster in California.
-
- WHAT IS NEEDED NOW: Because decisions on the handling of radioac-
- tive waste will be made very soon in California and elsewhere, the
- need to get this videotape out now is very, very critical. In or-
- der to do this we need $10,500 immediately, to pay the production
- and post-production debt, and to cover the duplication and distri-
- bution costs, so that it can be used immediately to mobilize
- Californians to oppose this dump.
-
- This project is sponsored by the Film Arts Foundation, a non-
- profit 501(C)(3) public foundation. Please make TAX DEDUCTIBLE DO-
- NATION checks payable to Film Arts Foundation/Wake Up California
- Project, and mail them to Karil Daniels, Director/Co-Producer,
- 2477 Folsom St., San Francisco, CA 94110 For more information or
- to order copies ($20.00 + $5.00 postage/handling) call Karil
- Daniels at (510) 821-0435, fax (510) 931-0948, igc!hsd. Thank you

-
-
- TWO NEW TOOLS FOR THE CANNABIS REFORM MOVEMENT TO
- EDUCATE THE PUBLIC about the Cannabis Plant !
-
-
- The Institute for Hemp has completed TWO NEW VIDEOS about
- Cannabis Sativa, Hemp, or Marijuana. After the exceptional reception
- of our first Video documentary on Cannabis called RThe Return of the
- New Billion Dollar CropS, it was clearly necessary to go into depth
- about the use and history of the Cannabis plant.
-
- With that we have developed RThe Return ofS series of videos.
-
- The first video _The Return of the New Billion Dollar Crop_
- looks at the broad scope of Cannabis. Covering the History,
- Commercial, and some medicinal use of the plant, this video covers it
- all in 30 mins. If you know little about cannabis and want to learn
- more then this is the perfect source of information.
-
- The Second Video _The Return of the History of Cannabis Sativa
- Hemp_. After many requests to expand on the History of Cannabis we
- developed this film to fill that need. Covering in detail the history
- of cannabis. From the Dawn of recorded history to present day the
- complete history of hemp is given in this thirtry min film.
-
- The Third Video RThe Return of the Commercial Cannabis Crop.
- After many requests to go into detail the commercial use of cannabis
- we developed this film. Covering in detail several of the Thousands
- of commercial applications. The film also explores their impact on
- the Economy, Environment, and Farm Community. If your are interested
- in the commercial impact of hemp cultivation youUll love this film.
- If you know nothing of the commercial applications you can quickly see
- the need to add cannabis to the farm crop.
