- This is a proposal to write an add-on to or a new (version of) GNUS.

- I have the same problem, and more.
-
- Indecisive as I am ;), I don't know whether I'm interested in an
- article or a newsgroup until I've seen what's in it. So how can I keep
- the startup-time, the .netrc and memory & cpu-time usage small, and
- still be able to access and know of the existence of any one newsgroup
- or article?
-
- What I would like is a newsreader that presents me only one level of
- the newsgroup hierarchy at a time. Put another way, only the top
- hierarchy level should be visible, like "alt, aus, austin, ba, ...
- ,zer". Then you select the desired (meta-)group, e.g. "gnu". Next,
- only "up"==top lvl and "announce, bash.bug, chess, ... , , utils" are
- to be visible. And so on.
-
- Or, alternatively, a customized and/or interactively made selection of
- entries in selected levels could be made, just as in "tree-dired".
-
- This way, the newsreader has to keep track of the information
- concerning only those things that I actually see. Besides, it would
- increase the usability by i-dont-know-how-much, because ~3600
- newsgroups (here) is simply intimidating and NOT serving the overview,
- as we say in germany. ;-)
-
- At first, I thought of implementing that like the "outline-mode", but
- that'd be too messy a solution.
-
- So, if anybody has a hack that does just that, don't hesitate... No,
- I'm just joking, I'm (almost) shure it would have reached us here. :(
-
- If anybody is willing to write this, I'm willing to help. I have good
- experience in emacs-lisp, but few in C and none in modififying GNUS.
- Maybe someone could estimate the level of difficulty of such a
- project.
