- I recently found myself annoyed at how much time I seem to be spending
- just arranging my windows in positions that are pleasing, and
- remembered RTL, the Siemens Tiled Window Manager. I used RTL for the
- brief period of time that I was running X11R3; when I upgraded to R4,
- RTL stopped working and I switched to GWM.
-
- But like I say, I was thinking that a WM that does the thinking for me
- might be just the thing, so I went looking for RTL. It hasn't come
- with the X distribution since R3 (maybe R4), and archie could only
- find one site in the entire world with a copy of the source. Plus a
- lot of sites with a patch for it.
-
- So I snarfed, patched, compiled and installed and whattaya know, it
- actually works under R5!
-
- Well, sort of, anyway. An hour's use reveals a few problems with
- probably more to come -- e.g., when an application exits or is killed,
- the keyboard focus seems to end up pointing nowhere (requiring RTL to
- be restarted); typical application ``dismiss'' or ``exit'' commands
- have no effect, etc. After all, RTL is ancient: it seems to date from
- 1989!
-
- So I was wondering if 1. anybody out there is actually still using
- RTL, 2. is there a more recent version than mine (release 5.2pl1, I
- think) and 3. are there any other (free) tiling WM's out there?
-
- RTL is way kinky, but there's something about I find hard to resist...
- And it sure does amaze the office mates. Remember,
-
- If you want to live in style
- Have your window system tile
