  15. I sure am glad that this bunch is NOT in charge at Intel. It seems that 
  16. many techie types never forgave Intel for the original 486sx chip which
  17. had the disabled FP unit. I think it was a stroke of genius. Almost all
  18. pre 486 systems had NO FP. So clearly most people didn't need the FP.
  19. So whoy not offer them what they need at lower price. The COST of the chip
  20. is not in the one-by-one production its in the plant to make these things
  21. in the first place and the R&D cost of design. Intel is faced with a semi
  22. commodity market and yes it's in Intel's interest to keep ahead of the
  23. competition.

  25. Now the 486SX is it's own die and is smaller and available in a plastic
  26. pack. As I remember the  SX parts are down in the ~$100 range in quantity.

  28. If Intel had invented the SX first with an offboard FP usnit and then
  29. announced the new and improved DX with "on-board FP" then everyone would  
  30. have a much different attitude.

  32. BTW I see LOTS of 486 SX units in the stores now. Even HP has one that
  33. lists at like $1200 w/o disk or monitor. So Intel has put 486 "iron"
  34. down into the price range of many many more consumers.

  36. Shareholders are not interested in how "hokey" some particular approach 
  37. is they want profits! Consumers are not interested in how Intel originally
  38. designed something, they're only interested in bang/$. I'd say Intel is right on
  39. track.
