  15. I was just curious if there was any truth to the claim that
  16. I've heard about BSDI doing a port of BSD to the Sparc line,
  17. so that BSD lovers can avoid Solaris 2?  If so, when?

  19. It also occured to me today that some company might make a lot
  20. of money by picking up the rights to SunOS 4/Solaris 1.  They
  21. could continue to support it, and evolve it.  And if they added
  22. some sort of binary compatability to Solaris 2 applications,
  23. they could probably keep a very good customer base.  From what I
  24. hear, a lot of people inside SunSoft think it was a mistake to
  25. switch to SVR4..and it seems that a lot of the customers feel
  26. the same way.

  28. I know that if I had access to a continued SunOS 4 product, and
  29. knew that one way or another, applications vendors would still 
  30. support it (either by the OS supporting Solaris applications, or
  31. by the vendors supporting this continued product), I'd prolly buy
  32. it.  Same goes for a pure BSD4.3 or 4.4 product.  (though, honestly,
  33. I do prefer SunOS...it felt like a good mix to me..mostly BSD with
  34. some useful extensions)

  36. I think BSDI might find a good market in doing a version of BSD
  37. that supports the features of SunOS 4, with the ability to support
  38. Solaris 2 applications (sort of like the way BSD/386 is planned to
  39. support SCO applications).  Such a product for the new Sparc products
  40. (that Sun will not ship with Solaris 1) could probably go a long way.
