- >1a) Are there any 24 bit video cards that work under unix?
-
- Yes. Both C='s A2410 and the DMI Resolver. Note that both use an
- 8-bit color map with a 24-bit palette. This means 256 colors out of a
- palette of 16 million.
-
- I don't know of any cards with full 24-bit support, although the
- Vivid24 (also from DMI) might fit the bill -- I don't wanna say for
- sure, 'cuz I'm not positive.
-
- >1b) Are ther any 24 bit cards under $2000 (US) that have drivers for unix X windows?
-
- Yes. Same as above.
-
- >2) Does unix, X windows, take advantage of the type & speed of the graphics processor the video card has?
-
- No, not really. Generally X Windows is not structured correctly.
- This is being addressed by the MIT group doing the development, and
- _may_ appear in Release 6, but I wouldn't count on it. This
- requirement means that modularity of low-level graphics handling needs
- to be better coordinated with higher-level operations.

- >3) Does the Firecracker card work?
-
- (This may be a bit ignorant, but that never stopped me before!)
-
- Firecracker is a frame buffer, correct? If so, where's the graphics
- processor? (Hint: it doesn't have one)

-
- Not familiar with these either.

- We'll see if it'll make you happy or not. ;-)
