  12. I opened a PMR this summer about the chown() system's call inability to
  13. change the ownership on symbolic links, as documented, and was told that
  14. the documentation would be changed.  They said the functionality of chown()
  15. was changed for "POSIX compliance", many people had complained about it.

  17. I asked, "How then does one change the ownership of a symbolic link?"  I
  18. was told that this does seem to be a missing feature; one could remove the
  19. link, setuid, and recreate the link if one really needed it.  "Why would
  20. you ever need to change the ownership of a symbolic link?"

  22. I haven't tried if tar, pax, or restore get this right, but these are
  23. programs that would need to change the ownership of a link.  Of course,
  24. I also had such a program.

  26. My PMR also resulted in a design change request, DCR 62508.  I haven't
  27. been able to find out what happened to it, though.
