- I opened a PMR this summer about the chown() system's call inability to
- change the ownership on symbolic links, as documented, and was told that
- the documentation would be changed. They said the functionality of chown()
- was changed for "POSIX compliance", many people had complained about it.
-
- I asked, "How then does one change the ownership of a symbolic link?" I
- was told that this does seem to be a missing feature; one could remove the
- link, setuid, and recreate the link if one really needed it. "Why would
- you ever need to change the ownership of a symbolic link?"
-
- I haven't tried if tar, pax, or restore get this right, but these are
- programs that would need to change the ownership of a link. Of course,
- I also had such a program.
-
- My PMR also resulted in a design change request, DCR 62508. I haven't
- been able to find out what happened to it, though.
